Reading this as my 9 year old daughter enjoyed it and asked me to read it. We both enjoy crime fiction. It’s definitely a book for young people, and the teenage girls are irritating and spoilt, (my daughter didn’t think this though - she said that’s what teenagers are like!) but the plot was good. I liked the references to Agatha Christie, Priestly, ‘M’ which will lead young readers to other stories as they grow. I liked the reference to world affairs in the mid-1930s. A good, fun page turner.
Stevens YA series remains a clever and entertaining homage to the Golden Age of cozy mysteries including a direct nod to Christie's Murder on the Orient Express in this volume.

Once again Robin Stevens murder most unladylike series is just brilliant and the plot of this one is particularly brilliant
Moderate: Death, Racism, Antisemitism, Grief, Murder
Another marvelous Wells and Wong mystery, with some personal and familial growth for both girls. Also, I loved the 'Murder on the Orient Express' inspired plot, especially the meta-reference to the Christie novel being a favourite of the girl's crime collection.
re-read from when i was younger, i loved it the same as i did when i was 10 tbh
3.75 , somehow felt like nothing happened at all but also a lot whirred past my head too fast. alexander cutest though
Daisy and Hazel are spending their holiday on board The Orient Express. They are under strict instructions to do absolutely no detective work whatsoever...thank goodness they don't do as they're told.
As a younger reader I would have loved to have read about the adventures of these two. They are rather old-fashioned (the 1930s setting makes their behaviour/scenarios feasible) but their camaraderie is reminiscent of Holmes and Watson, though the drugs are replaced with cakes and crossword puzzles!
Within hours of them getting on board the train we've been introduced to our ragtag bunch of characters, who become suspects in this third case involving the Detective Society.
So, we have a spoilt heiress; a rude husband; a penniless relative who writes murder mysteries; a Russian Countess and a magician. When Mrs Daunt is found in a locked room with her throat cut we immediately have a reason to mistrust every character we've come across, and it's over to the girls to work out who did it and why.
Great fun, raising awareness of some bigger issues and, hopefully, arousing curiosity in its readers to learn more of the time/events referred to.
