The earth has survived the climate crisis. Regular people turned heroes banded together to save humanity from complete and total destruction at the hands of the handful of wealthy "climate criminals" around the world. "The Great Transition" opens just before the sixteenth anniversary of Day Zero - the day the earth returned to zero carbon emissions. Emi Vargas'' mother refuses to celebrate. In fact, she is leaving for a volunteer stint at an outpost in New York. She forbids Emi and her father to attend the celebrations, as she does every year. But once Kristina leaves, who's to know?
As Emi and her dad Larch weave their way through throngs of people in preparation for the Day Zero parade, Larch decides to "ping" Kristina and let her know where they are - to show her that Emi's first Day Zero is a positive, even healthy experience for their 15 year old daughter. Kristina responds immediately: run now. And then all hell breaks loose.
Alternating between the real time drama around Day Zero and flashbacks of Emi's parents life growing up through the climate crisis, "The Great Transition" is a propulsive debut novel set in the not too distant future, painting both a grim and hopeful picture of what our future might hold and how we might survive.

the audiobook's actors really made this shine. Very affecting!
It's weird that a book published after the beginning of covid primarily ignores pandemics as a thing.

I liked the setting and the premise of the book, it felt like a very possible direction human race could be heading. The characters were okay. I liked that we have two parents that represent two sides of the direction human race can take from this point. I also believe the way they raise her daughter is realistic as people with PTSD would raise a child, both wanting her to have a perfect life, unlike the one they themselves had at some points wanting her to know the struggle they went through that made them into who they were. The plot itself was okay but not particularly engaging. I liked the flashbacks up to a point then I kind of got tired of them.
In conclusion not a bad book but not a book that I think will stay in my mind.
