Darynda Jones in her acknowledgement thanks the readers for allowing Defiance, Annette, Ruthie and Roane into our lives but honestly dear Darynda, we should be thanking YOU for providing us such a quirky and brilliant paranormal love story brimming with humor that had me rolling on the floor laughing.
It has been a long while that I have read a book which made me guffaw out loud, every aspect of this story leaving the fan girl in me happy. Right from page 1 where Dayne meets an all-purple clad house agent there was not a single sentence that didn’t make me laugh. I would have loved to have a grandmother like Ruthie in my life. In fact, I would have loved to have a best friend like Annette also in my life. Defiance Dayne is pushing 40 and in a terrible fix both personally and financially when a temperamental house called Percival is gifted to her. Wary and suspicious of everything, Dayne discovers her true identity of being a charmling, guided by her already dead grandmother Ruthie.
The story moves at a lovely pace with witchy events happening one after another alongside a very attractive and charming Roane who happens to take everything in his stride.
Betwixt is book # 1 in the Betwixt and Between series featuring an exquisite set of characters that for once I sincerely wished to binge-read the whole series. Surely looking forward to read the next two books.

This was really difficult to rate. On one hand I loved the boldness of the story it wasn't afraid of trying new things, the characters were snarky and middle aged, it was easy to read, but on the other hand something was missing. A big something. More explanation or just more happenings in this world. I wasn't given enough to want to continue. Like the book was more of a sample than a meal.
But omg finally a middle age fantasy romance. I mean not everyone is a 20 year old virgin. This tale was lighthearted and fun although a bit predictable. The memes and shirt quotes were my favorite. And while I did get lost in the snarky fun, the book had it's problems. Dayne 40 something didn't talk or act like her age. There also wasn't full proof why Grandma had to stay away and not train her to use her powers. And how Dayne apparently didn't need to train because she just had the symbols floating in her head from birth.
Dayne procrastinated continuously even to save her own life. Again she was middle age which is so very rare for some reason but then again she was also super special which isn't that rare in the book community. Her best friend was very wild and fun which added nicely to the story. And when the both became brain dead and drooling when Roane walked into a room, that had me in stitches. My biggest problem was that the book didn't give enough. It left you with a cliffhanger and not enough time to get invested so I didn't feel compelled to continue.

First of all, what a beautiful cover on this book, just look at it! I admit that I have had a print copy of this book on my bookshelf since it was released. I finally took time out from my large TBR pile to catch up on this series and I am so glad that I did. As I am not normally a reader of paranormal or magical realism, it really takes a great author to get me to pick up a title in one of these genres. Darynda Jones is one of the very few authors of paranormal that I trust to deliver a delightfully fun, sexy, and heartfelt story. Her world-building is fantastic. I devoured Betwixt and can't wait to read the next in this series, Bewitched.

I'm a huge fan of Darynda Jones. I devoured every book in the Charlie Davidson series, impatiently waiting for the next one.
Betwixt left me a little bemixed. While I adore Darynda's writing style infused with sarcasm and humor, like others I did notice a lot of similarities with the Charlie series. Be that as it may, it did NOT stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book and reading it in just a few days. (probably could've done it in one sitting, but ya know, life.)
The MC Defiance is such a hoot. And I noticed several reviewers criticizing her because they didn't think forty-somethings talk like that. WTF! Do you think once a person is past the age of... or I don't know.... 35 that we become these trodden down, old people who suddenly forget who they are, and settle into a life of a grandma? I mean come on! That's utter bullshite. You're only as old as you believe.
Defiance was great and I loved her interactions with her sidekick Annette. And yes, I did notice similarities between them and Charlie and Cookie in the Davidson Series, but that's okay, that's what made me fall in love with that series.
My only real complaint is I would have liked to see more heat between Defiance and the hottie in the kilt but I'm hoping that ramps up in the next book, which I will absolutely read.
Thanks, Darynda for creating another lit set of characters and showing the world there is life beyond forty. Or so I've heard. LOL

This was an okay read, but tough at times. The descriptions and verbiage at times could take me out of the story. There were also some interesting plot drops that kind of came out of nowhere.
While I was reading, I mentioned how it seemed like a television soap-opera and I think I hit the nail on the head more or less. It reminds me of those kind of trashy television shows you watch, knowing it's going to be fairly bad but funny and entertaining.
I'll probably read the sequel just to see what happens, after the cliffhanger they left it one. I'm not necessarily in a rush to do that though.

This was okay. I enjoyed it, it had some fun aspects and the humour was mostly well-done and mostly made me smile.
I honestly expected to like this more than I in fact did overall. It felt a bit like everything was trying too hard: too hard to be funny, too hard to be clever, too hard to be quirky. Some points felt a bit overdone and forced, but it was fun.
The magical world the author's created here also was not bad and I did enjoy that. But I never quite connected with Defiance as much as I feel like I should have. She made me roll my eyes at more than one point with her insistence on letting people - read: her ex-husband and his witch of a mother - take advantage of her when she has a family and friends who would have helped and she really should have let them help her.
Finally, the romance here really only hit me a meh. I feel I should have been more into it than I was. The whole thing was just okay. It's probably me and not this book, not every book can be 5 stars and this one, for me, just, wasn't. But it was fine and I did enjoy it; I just didn't love it.
