I feel like I don’t even know what kind of book I just read. At times I liked it and at times it was boring. I felt pretty confused most of the time. Maybe it would mean more if I was a parent.
Apollo Kagwa has a wonderful wife, a great mum, and a career that he built from the ground up. His son is born in the New York metro, in a stalled train, and Apollo throws himself into fatherhood with gusto - the playground, the nappy changes, the hundreds of baby photos on Facebook.
Until it all goes wrong, and Apollo is swept by horror and tragedy into a side of New York that he didn't know existed.
I wasn't expecting this book to go where it went. The story and tone of it reminded me of [b:Winter's Tale|12967|Winter's Tale|Mark Helprin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442048864l/12967._SY75_.jpg|1965767] by [a:Mark Helprin|8146|Mark Helprin|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1376934367p2/8146.jpg] although I can't pinpoint why beyond the New York setting. I had to take a break in the middle of it (if you've read it, you'll know when), and I wasn't sure I would pick it back up again. But I'm glad I did, as the second half of the book dragged me along with it.
Hidden islands, city parks, cybercrime, witches, monsters - but not really like any others books that have these elements. I'm exhausted after it.

Finally, a book I wanted to read and finish. An interesting story. It kept me going and I really had no idea where next. And isn’t that the point of a good story?

Such a fantastic read. A dark fairy tale I never knew I needed. I already can’t wait to read it again.
