"It occurs to me that hearts and souls and lives can themselves be sites of unimaginable suffering." S. is basically 2 romances and 2 mystery novels for the price of one book. Beautiful to look and beautiful to read. This was by far one of the best books I've read in a very long time.
Be prepared though that in typical J.J. fashion, not all of the mysteries will be solved. There are several minor plot points that are left up in the air. This is an amazing book.
It's a little chunk of the universe – carved out, stored, preserved, and delivered – until you read it, and flip through the pages again and again, and leave your own marks on it here and there – and then it becomes kind of real, a part of your world.
This is something I hope to return to later. I can't say I've understood everything, not even the basic story; like many others, I haven't figured out the code wheel (ok i know i can find how to do it online, but that's no fun, is it?). There are a lot of loose threads, not everything is explained and served on a silver plate – but this is what makes it real. It's as if you just found this book in a dusty cabinet or a musty box in the attic somewhere and just flipped it open.
I don't know how the idea crossed the author's minds, or how they executed this project – but it is absolutely undeniable awesome.
