This is my 2nd Kristopher Triana book, and like the first, I enjoy his writing style.
This one felt a bit different from the first one I read, but I still enjoyed the read. It's a bit taboo, and I wouldn't consider it a true extreme horror, but I definitely consider it a psychological horror with some splatterpunk and some taboo elements that are in the past but are told on page.
Lori is penpals with Edmund, a man in prison for raping and killing multiple women. She's also in charge of her sister, who suffers from brain damage as a result of a childhood incident. We learn about the disturbing family dynamics between the 2, as well as the younger brother. Edmund requests her to go on a quest to deliver something to the River Man. It gets dark and suspenseful as the journey goes on.
His writing style flows very well, and his character development is on point. With that, on top of great story telling, he is an author I will certainly read more from.

This book singlehandedly put me into a months long reading slump, but I persevere.
The writing style is good, but the content is gratuitous and leans towards shock horror than anything else. Not for me.

Graphic: Grief, Death, Blood, Incest, Gore, Toxic relationship, Sexual violence, Murder, Suicide, and Child death
Moderate: Ableism, Emotional abuse, and Violence
The incest in particular is more graphic than necessary and involves children, please be careful if this is a triggermirandarocks's review against another edition

Very good book. Terrifying imagery. One of the few books where you actually hate the main character but still like the book.
