Well, things really went to crap in this book. Honestly, I NEVER thought it would go as far as the wards coming down AND Mac getting raped by 3/4ths of the Four Horsemen AND the Lord Master essentially owning her. It's like how on Earth is Mac going to recover from this and will anyone be able to help her? Will she even be able to save herself?

Finally, I still want to know who Barrons is. I have been theorizing he is a member of Fae royalty (I mean didn't things started getting "icy" around him later in the book? I could have sworn that happened a couple of times in passing. And that's something that happens around V'Lane when he's pissed off. So if Barrons is doing it too, that has to be a very powerful Fae thing). I think it's fair to say that the UnSeelie King theory could be true, but I also thought (and later saw that Mac also did in her journal), that he could be some kind of Seelie/UnSeelie hybrid. I really, really hope we find out soon.

I have been getting the books from the library, but there's a wait on Book 4 and I'm tempted to just buy it to see what happens next.

Things are starting to pick up with this. I dont think it is ever going to hook me but it is pretty fun.

The book moved slowly until the very end—oh geez, things have escalated.

4.5/5

I’m devouring this series at a rapid rate that can’t be healthy. It’s addictive. The slow burn is still going strong and it’s driving me crazy!! The tension between Mac and Jericho could be cut with a knife. I also liked Mac a lot more in this book—she’s definitely growing by going through some crazy shit. After the ending I’m SCARED for her. This whole series has me questioning who tf I can trust—all I know is that I’m rooting for Mac. This is definitely a series that has a romantic subplot—it is absolutely not the main focus. The plot is full of non-stop action that makes this series impossible to put down.

3.5 stars. If I don’t start getting answers to my questions, I’m going to lose it!!! I loved the last book and this one had similar great elements but just was missing something. Probably not enough Barrons interactions. I’m pleading for the next book to give me my answers and more Barrons!

Man! I am working my way through this series! They're just so fun to read and you keep saying to yourself, "Just one more chapter," and the next thing you know, the book is finished. Mac starts to receive torn pages from Alina's journal, so she is starting to get some new information. She's still not completely sure who to trust, so she she is alternating asking for help from Barrons and V'lane. She's found out some more information about the Sinsar Dubh, but doesn't know quite yet how to capture it. Mac and Rowena are still butting heads, so who knows what's going to happen there.

OH SHIT MAN. ITS REALLY GOING DOWN NOW.
Either the series is getting better or I'm just hopelessly hooked now, either way KMM gets alllllll my money.

There's a bit in 30 Rock where Jack says that Liz's trashy but comfortable relationship is like the off brand Mexican cheesy snacks she likes. This series is my off brand Mexican cheesy snacks. Tastes kinda nasty, bad for me, but impossible not to finish the bag.

Also, I think I'm the only ever reader of this series to figure out who Barrons is this late in the game. He's still a knob though.

I’m living for this series so hard RN

If Mac and Barrons don’t bang soon, I’m going to explode.

This book pissed me the fuck off. Mac is such a bumbling vapid moron that it’s become unbearable. I was HOPING for some character development that I felt was in the works from books 1 and 2. Unfortunately, she might be dumber and more vain than she started off.

I’ll start with something less egregious than the rest that pissed me off. We’re reintroduced to Dani, a 13 year old firecracker who kills a bunch of fae and swears constantly. As we know, Mac is just a sweet southern belle and never swears. She says petunia instead of ass. So Mac tells Dani “pretty girls don’t swear.” Dani says she doesn’t care about being pretty. But Mac saw Dani wearing makeup GASP, so obviously she cares. Deducing this, with such irrefutable evidence, Mac realizes she simply must set Dani at ease and reassure her that someday she’ll be so beautiful.

Moving on to my primary issue with this book and heavy spoilers, every single male character in this displays a stunning ignorance of consent. We have V’lane who forces kisses on Mac to give her his name. She asked for his name, but he neglects to tell her how it has to be given - just forces it on her. While not forgivable, this would be understandable as V’lane does not comprehend humans.

Next, we have Barrons, The Love Interest. He has a power called The Voice where he can command anyone to do anything he asks. In two books, he has not used this on Mac. In this one, he sees V’lane kiss her and flies off the handle and forces her to answer questions that she does not want to answer. It is not comfortable to read. After, Mac angrily says he’s raped her and he retorts
“Make no mistake, Ms. Lane, I didn’t rape you. You can lie there on your pretty little P.C. ass and claim with your idealistic little P.C. arguments that any violation of your will is rape and that I’m a big, bad bastard, and I’ll tell you that you’re full of shit, and you’ve obviously never been raped. Rape is much, much worse. Rape isn’t something you walk away from. You crawl.” (fucking foreshadowing)

Before this he even hits her with a “you’re an illogical WOMAN.” Aside from him completely violating Mac’s consent, he’s also a relentless prick. At one point, she buys him a birthday cake and he slaps it out of her hands so hard it hits the ceiling. It’s clear the author is on board with all of this behavior because HE’S THE LOVE INTEREST.

Oh, and the book ends with Mac getting raped. Not only did I fucking hate this just for it happening, it’s clear it’s being written in to make Barrons right in the previous quote. See, he isn’t that bad! He only violates your consent non-sexually. Isn’t it so much worse to be literally raped?

Genuinely fuck this book. The author clearly has a lot of beliefs I don’t jive with, including a “we in the Deep South lost everything once” line at one point. That’s on top of using rape as a vehicle to redeem the love interest’s continual breaches of consent non-sexually. I’m so disappointed in how far this has devolved, because the plot itself is actually intriguing and I want to know how things unravel. I’m going to attempt the next book but jesus fucking christ.
