I wasn’t as entranced by this book as the first one, but it was a lot easier to follow

So I'm writing again. Which is good news, I suppose, for those wanting a second book, but more unfortunate for the people who had to die so I could write it.
Dare I say... this was even better than the first one?
Everyone on This Train has all the things I loved about Everyone in My Family, but with a setting that I personally found even more intriguing: the 50th Australian Mystery Writers Society festival held on The Ghan. Having a bunch of bickering authors as the primary cast and having so many clues involving writing and publishing is right up my alley!
Once again, Stevenson (or should I say, Cunningham) lays out ground rules for himself and the reader and weaves them into the story as a literary device; it's just such a fun inclusion and such good use of first-person narration! I love the returning cast members, few as they may be, and the progression of Ernie's story and I love that this was surprisingly heartfelt!
As for my issues from the first book, none of that here; the pacing never lulls and the clues all line up bloody perfectly.

FAVOURITE QUOTES
Silence is a tap left running: it fills and fills until it overflows and becomes insurmountable.
_____
A bunch of writers in a room requires a collective noun that the English language doesn’t have. A condolence, perhaps. A sympathy. It’s a war hospital for the written word.
_____
It’s not the writing that tells the story, it’s the reading.
_____
"You wouldn't understand. I want to be known for the art I made, for my words and my voice, not for the mark some man left on me."
