This was a perfect book to read on my weekend lake getaway. Pacing was great, lots of fun twists that feel obvious in hindsight, but also a couple ones that felt like stretches for the main character to figure out. It was hard to put down, which was nice since I've been reading a lot of bummer-ass fiction recently where terrible things just keep happening to innocent people.
The book being an overly self-aware pastiche is a fine framing device, but it was definitely grating on me in the beginning of the book. I would say I was mostly used to it by the end, but I also have whatever the opposite of a soft spot is for media pieces where someone says "this isn't a [type of media the story is]! It's real life!" (unless they are in the movie Scream) and this one played that totally straight.
Re: "Its complicated" for whether the characters are lovable—I didn't feel like I got to know anybody very well other than Ernest, and he is honestly kind of insufferable sometimes.Juliette deserved a way better apology and should not have agreed to marry him at the end. Oh well.

Romanele din aceeași serie nu sunt mereu dezamăgitoare, să știi. Uneori, o a doua încercare este exact lucrul de care ai nevoie. Posibilitatea de a repara greșelile pe care le-ai făcut prima dată.
Am vrut să încep cu acest citat, aparținând chiar lui Ernest Cunningham, pentru că explică perfect experiența mea cu cărțile lui Benjamin Stevenson.
Dacă primului volum, "Toți cei din familia mea au ucis pe cineva", i-am acordat doar 2✦, cel de-al doilea volum al autorului merită cu vârf și îndesat cele 5✦ pe care i le-am oferit.
Ar trebui să precizez de la început că eu consider această carte ca fiind un cozy-mystery-crime perfect realizat. Nu cred că e un thriller în adevăratul sens al cuvântului, deși avem parte de destule cadavre. Totuși, nu este o carte în care să fi simțit acea atmosferă apăsătoare de suspans specifică unui thriller, ci mai degrabă o curiozitate constantă și amuzament, mai ales datorită unor pasaje precum:
— Ce mama dracului faceți cu toții aici? ne-a întrebat Aaron din prag.
Jasper și Harriet se ițeau în spatele lui: ei trebuie să-l fi adus.
— Investigăm, am spus eu.
— Ne gândim, a spus Lisa.
— Citim, a spus Wolfgang.
— Afară. Afară. Ieșiți afară!
Pentru mine, această carte a fost perfectă: exact cât trebuia de lungă, fără pasaje inutile. Stilul autorului s-a îmbunătățit, păstrându-și însă farmecul inițial. Povestea este relatată din nou la persoana întâi, dar acum are și mai multe subtilități, glume și ironii, ceea ce o face cu atât mai savuroasă.
Mi-au plăcut foarte mult atât finalul, cât și faptul că nu ni se oferă doar un singur criminal și o rezolvare simplă, ci povestea este atent construită și suficient de complexă încât să avem mai multe mistere ce trebuie elucidate. Am ghicit și eu, pe alocuri, anumite lucruri, am intuit criminalul înainte să fie dezvăluit și, per total, am avut parte de cea mai plăcută și rapidă lectură de „thriller” din ultima vreme.
La final, vreau doar să mai împărtășesc un ultim citat superb, care, cred eu, este cea mai frumoasă apreciere ce ne poate fi adusă nouă, cititorilor:
Dar moștenirea nu-i o ștampilă făcută cu cerneală de oameni. Nu e vorba să-ți lași tu amprentele, ci este despre amprentele lăsate pe tine. În cazul cărților, moștenirea nu este creată scriind-o, ci este creată de oamenii care iau în mână cartea, care îți extind, îmbogățesc și luminează vorbele cu felul în care le reinterpretează, și le amintesc și le retrăiesc.

Usually I can figure out a mystery before the end. Even this one had me shocked! Oh how I wish I could read it all again.
Really enjoyed this meta murder mystery about a conference of mystery writers gone awry with an actual IRL murder to solve. Apparently, it's a sequel to Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone, but I didn't realize it until I read it. Oops. Now I need to go back and read the first. Despite it being a sequel, it still made sense and was highly amusing.
Exactly what I expected and that's very pleasing. Can't wait to read the third one.
Interesting mystery novel...very meta in the way it self references what the author is doing himself through the narrator. The last twist was I think a bit unnecessary but this is also my first time finding the narrator to be, frankly, quite insufferable so I guess it's justified.
