YA but I was so sat. also heartbreaking
——
Super tough to read. Despite being set against the backdrop of the Syrian civil war, many of the atrocities described are similar to what we’re seeing in Palestine today.

What a beautiful heartbreaking tale. The author does not hold back on the very real life atrocities the people of Syria are going through everyday. The side that the media does not show you. This is a tale of strength, resilience and above all… hope. I can’t completely get my words down as to how this book made me feel and what I think of it. It truly was incredible. There is so much love, pain, anger, soul crushing sadness but also tiny moments of joy and happiness.
Reading about the horrors Syrians face everyday was shocking, I’m not blind to it and I have seen what happens. But to read it and hold a book in your hands that is all about that pain…is heartbreaking. Because you just feel useless. However, it’s necessary to understand that while we may live comfortable and decent lives in our own worlds there are people jsut like us who don’t have that luxury, through no fault of their own.
The main characters Salama and Kenan, I just don’t even know what to say. What beautiful people. In soul and heart. There were so many shocking moments that lead to tears and me flipping the book down because I just couldn’t. Salama volunteers at a hospital and the love she and Kenan share is so precious and rare.
Muslim representation can be done so wrong and can become harmful when the media perceives in a certain way. But this? Just shows the very beauty of Islam. This is no fairy tale but Salama and Kenan carved out a little world for them under hopeless circumstances. I hope they stay happy forever.
People in places like Syria are not just images on a screen, they aren’t just numbers read over the news channels, but they are real people.
This incredible book comes out September 15th, so you better buy it!
