Amazing story about love, care, generosity, courage, pain and growth. Two very different people with very different lives that come together and develop an unbreakable bond. Also a look into our governments welfare system and lack of amenities for recovering or mentally ill individuals.

At first, I thought this was going to be poverty - porn. Then, as Schroff got into her own background about 30 pages in, I realized that it was more than that. She was self-aware when she wrote this book about how it would come off to people who grew up in circumstances similar/close to Maurice's, and was sensitive to her own failings and misconceptions. It was a good read, and Maurice had his own hand in the writing process, which made things a little better for me as a reader. Not great, not especially excellent writing, and not world-shaking. A good short read, though.

The story is incredible and inspiring. Well worth the read. The only downside is that it is not very well written and it was distracting at times. Still read it!

I'd really give this 4.5 stars.

I enjoyed the stories of how to trust even when you've been betrayed in the past, to move forward without looking back, and to dream big no matter how many people believe you're reaching for more than you're capable of. Great story for teens.

What would happen if we all took interest in each other? I really enjoyed this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. This is the heartfelt story of the unlikely friendship between an eleven-year-old boy who is hungry and a woman who takes him out to lunch. Maurice is used to begging on the street; meals in the place he lives are hard to come by. When Laura walks past him one day, he is surprised to see her pause, come back, and invite him to lunch. The two become regular dinner companions, and over the years, fixtures in each other’s lives. This is the young reader’s edition, which seems to be aimed at fourth or fifth grade readers.

Enjoyable book about two people who helped each other. Liked that she got as much out of the relationship as Maurice did.
