I found this book very inspirational. I loved the heartwarming ending.

It reads like the Blind Side, but without sports involved.
The difference, though, is that they found and saved each other.

What an amazing and inspirational story of two very different people meeting and becoming the very best of friends. It's sad to realize that there are children out there that grow up in these same circumstances, and at the same time it is comforting to know that their are people out there willing to help them.
I really enjoyed this book.

I was looking for an inspiring true story about resiliency and hope, and Schroff delivered on many levels offering a firsthand account of leaving her comfort zone to make a powerful difference in a little boy's life. Shroff's writing style is comfortable and pleasant, and I enjoyed hearing her own story of growing up under extremely difficult circumstances.  As she told the primary story of her relationship with Maurice, however, it seemed as if her emotions/heart barely emerged. This was a great disappointment, causing me to walk away without any "warm fuzzies" and making me hesitate to recommend the book with much enthusiasm. I wish Schroff would have revealed a tiny glimpse of her soul by sharing, for example, a little bit more about what compelled her to do what she did, how her years-long experience with Maurice grew her as a person, how her experience may have inspired additional acts of service and love, etc. At the risk of being disingenuous, I still applaud Schroff for stepping out to help launch Maurice's life of success!

The story felt honest, with the author acknowledging her own shortcomings and bias as well as how those I packed relationship through the years.

A heartwarming story which serves as a great example to not judge a book by its cover; you never really know a person and why they are the way they are, until you take the time to learn their story.
Some reviews said this was poorly written but I disagree - it was done in a very "storytelling" way and allowed you to really feel the words.

It was encouraging to see how the lives of this 11-year-old boy and Laura Schroff intertwined through the years. Each made a difference in the life of the other. Seeing it from a biblical world view, however, each of them could have been so much more had they developed a relationship with the Creator of our universe.

A heart warming book. It’s a great book to read during this pandemic as a reminder that there is good and hope in the world.
