I read this collection of serials in 24 hours. I was absolutely riveted. And I WEPT. Sobbed.

One of the things I don’t see many discussions about is how E Block’s band of cis white penitentiary officers used John Coffey—“like the drink, but spelled differently”—both his talent (or “gift”) and physical body **without** his consent (at first). The idea to heal the warden’s wife was Paul’s idea, not John’s; John does, however, consent to heal her (and it is understood that he *wants* “to help”). Nevertheless, this is demonstrative of a huge power imbalance: although the tale implies that this white woman is deserving of health (simply based on Paul’s word), she is also the wife of his superior. As an inmate at the State Penitentiary, he has no autonomy, except when he thrusts his arms out of the cell to exert what supernatural power he wants. Paul, on the other hand, holds most of the power on the day-to-day running of The Mile. HUGE power discrepancies all around.

I always forget how racist Stephen King's books are. Trying to ignore that, we've got an ambiguous ending and a decently paced story. It was a bit repetitive, but I listened to it in the form it wasn't intended to be read in. It seemed like it introduced the supernatural element a bit too late, but it was still enjoyable.
