As someone who usually plows through books in a day or two, I had a hard time getting through this one. I read probably 20 books in between reading excerpts here and there of Mistborn; if I didn't own it, I probably would not have finished it. BUT the last 100 pages sold me on the book, everything came together really well in ways I did not anticipate. I thought the novel lacked in characterization but definitely had an intriguing plot (well, the ending that is) that I think explains why it is such a popular fantasy classic. Overall I'd say if you like heists and don't mind somewhat graphic violence then this may be the book for you.

While I did enjoy this book, and I feel like the ending elevated it from three stars to three and a half stars, I think that it really would have benefited from losing about a hundred pages. 640 pages was just too long and while there was stuff happening the whole time, the book still felt slow paced. Not a specific hundred pages, I just don't think that we needed to see everything in such detail.
I did enjoy the ending, I thought it was a rather satisfying conclusion. I'm not sure Brandon Sanderson is the author for me though, because I personally find his writing very 'telling rather than showing' and while I don't always need a lot of flowery descriptions and deep character introspection, again, 640 pages is a lot to just be told what is happening. If you like books where you just turn your brain off and have the story happen at you, then you'll like this book.
And while I definitely didn't predict all of the plot twists, the one about
the Lord Ruler not being the one who wrote the logbook
was kind of obvious by the time it was revealed.
Also the extreme amount of parallels between
this book and Brandon Sanderson's own Steelheart
just made me kind of mad.
At the end it felt like I'd just read the same book in a different font.

I'm kind of conflicted about this book. Although I'm giving it 4 stars, most of that comes down to the last few chapters, and the incredible world-building throughout. I won't lie - it was hard to get through all of the book. I'm not sure if it was simply the length, the slow pace (for 3/4 of the book - the last quarter really picked up), or maybe the audiobook narrator. There were a lot of times where I had to force myself to keep listening, which frustrated me, because on paper, this book is right up my alley. And it was good - there is no denying Sanderson's incredible talent not only for writing, but for the imaginative, original and in-depth worldbuilding. The magic system has got to be one of my favourites of all time, and is like nothing I've read before. The character development was really good, especially in the case of Vin, and I really liked the supporting characters; they felt authentic and dimensional, and didn't fall into cliché roles. I think really my qualms come down to how long the book was; I feel as though a fair amount of it could have been shorter. The final quarter of the book, however, was fantastic, and had plot twists that left my jaw actually hanging open. Hence the confliction!

This is the second series of Sanderson's that I've listened to - the first being his recent Skyward series. The pace, tone and style of these two series are completely different, which definitely threw me; I honestly don't think I'd have twigged they were by the same author. Still, all in all, this is a great example of fantasy worldbuilding, and I'm sure I'll continue the series.

The magic system in Mistborn is very unique and interesting. At first though, I wasn’t to sure about it. I found it a little weird, but as Vin began to learn to use it I came around. The characters… well. Our two main characters Vin and Kelsier were fine. They had some great moments sprinkled throughout. I needed Vin to be stronger though. I mean I know she’s technically still a kid (17?), but dang, the harsh world she lives in and her boss… I needed more than just spending the majority of her time going to balls and spinning some political drama toward the end. My favorite character was Sazad. I hated how he seemed pushed to the background even though he was probably the strongest person (magically speaking). I felt he had an unfair shake of things from his religious(?)/ethnic(?) background to basically acting as the creed servant down to calling Vin “Mistress.” I also didn’t like that listening to the audiobook, I felt that the narrator was delivering a slight Asian accent. I may be completely wrong on this, but it felt insensitive. The rest of Kelsier’s crew fell flat for me. They just had no personalities, and I found myself confusing a couple of them a few times. I wanted to love Lord Ellend with that meet cute. But, then he fell just as flat as the crew. The Lord Rule was giving generic bad guy, because we basically didn’t even see him. He was just this looming power that needs to be ended. But, I needed to see it, not just hear about it. Finally, we arrive at the pacing. I found this so terribly long and slow I nearly DNFed. I feel like it didn’t really start to pick up until maybe 60ish percent. This may be a me problem, because someone said it’s high fantasy and building a complex world and magic system takes time. Maybe high fantasy just isn’t my thing. Since finishing the book, I have found myself wondering if it was the audiobook version that caused all my issues. Maybe I would have had a different outcome if I had read a physical copy for myself. At this point, I’m unsure that I will continue the series.

This book was FIRE. So engaging and unique, and the world building was amazing! Only reason I’m giving it 4 stars in the middle was a ~tad~ bit boring. I could only read a chapter at a time. The ending was awesome though and although I did predict part of it it was not at all unsatisfying. Highly recommend!
