there was a lot i appreciated in here and even agreed with such as her titular proposition that all one needs to be a good writer is a room to yourself and money to sustain yourself. having both of these things allow an author to divest herself of societal pressures to write a certain way. i also agreed with some of her thoughts on truth in writing and the difficulty of being a female writer when there is no female writer tradition.
However she was pretty disrespectful and even sexist to other female writers and racist at times. her feminism is clearly a white one. i don’t agree that our anger/ experiences have no place in our work and i think it’s pretty privileged of her to say that women are whining all the time about men and that that makes their work worse. i also don’t agree that we cannot look to male writers when developing our craft, a thought which for her is rooted in some pretty outdated ideas of gender.
finally, she was just so condescending throughout the whole essay which really soured my taste of not just the essay, but of the author herself.

It was fine. Honestly, I can't decide if I have a lot or nothing to say about this book.
