The book's brief synopsis explains what you are setting yourself up for when you meet the two sisters.
Such a unique and clever story. A handful of funny moments. I recommend it. Ages 17+

A great read for anyone who loves messy characters & messy family relations!
for the most part, i was on mickey's side because i'm the eldest. i identify with her character because, like mickey and arlo, my sister and i see our dad differently. sure, he was smart and funny and takes care of all of us but i couldn't let go of the times his words stung.
he was more affectionate to my sister. she's the bunso, the apple of his eye. he even made a song for me. while me... i grew up on his eyes, probably had gotten tired of what and who i've become.
my father has scarred me in so many things i could not even find it in myself to forget. i haven't shared it to my sister even though we'd become closer in recent years simply because... she'd probably not agree to what i would say about him.
it's incredibly hard when love within a family doesn’t feel evenly shared, and even harder when that love feels conditional. that kind of wound—of not being chosen or cherished in the same way—cuts deep and lingers quietly. this book tells me it's not just about favoritism; it’s about longing for acknowledgment, about needing someone to see your pain without explaining it away.
edit: listening to Lorde's song which has the same title, from the Virgin album released today

What a hot mess! Hugely unlikeable but still somehow sympathetic characters, also the most unethical psychologist maybe ever????? Regardless, I couldn’t put this down!

When I picked up this book, I knew it was going to be a rough one. I don’t mean that in the sense of it being annoying to read or anything like that. No, I meant it would be emotionally taxing, so much so that I would sometimes need to take a break just to digest it all. Please don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this. But before you dive in, make sure to look up the content warnings.
I enjoyed the dynamic between Mickey and Arlo. I don’t see a lot of people talking about the fact that, at times, they were genuinely funny. It’s obviously a complicated situation, but it’s interesting to see how they each dealt with everything in their own way. Even though they’re so different, they’re still similar in the way they both feel like they’re failing (kind of).
This novel also makes you think about the ethical side of everything and helps you realize that not everything is as black and white as it seems.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a character-driven story, especially if you liked Blue Sisters or Fleabag (the show).
