1.5/5

Altro? No.
(PS: un bacio basta per sposarsi. Dopo tre settimane che vi conoscete. O K )

I absolutely adore this book, and the whole series. I've read it before - shortly after the tv series began (it's an excellent adaptation, if you're wondering). Though I haven't picked up these books in a few years, Diana and Matthew's story is never far from my mind. I just couldn't help but giggle every time Diana said 'I'm not likely to see him again' 20 pages into a 1500+ page series with two spin off books (so far).

This is one of only a few books I've annotated and it's in large part because the romance scenes are ones I want to return to over and over and over again. But the intricate storyline lends itself well to having a highlighter or a notepad nearby (iykyk, the first few chapters alone give us so much information). The writing is gorgeous; each paragraph full of little details and meaningful glances, but it never feels heavy or confusing. The way historic and contemporary stories are intertwined in this book are the epitome of what I look for in a historical romance story. There are themes of family - both blood and found, belonging, racial tension and prejudices, and love. All wrapped in more than a little magic.

This book could be called
"Edward Cullen goes to Oxford and smooches a Witch that the Death Eaters are after and they decide to Outlander the eff out of town."
I was outraged, bored, and then entertained. 4 stars!

I was thoroughly disappointed by this book. I picked this up whilst going through a vampire phase, so the only thing I knew about it was that there were vampires and witches.
Boy I wish this book was so much more, I don't know how it managed to get over 4 ⭐️
Big spoilers ahead, read at your own risk.

Romance
At first I was very hopeful. We have a strong independent scholar who loves her job and is passionate about history. How she refuses her magic was an interesting twist I was keen to see develop into (obviously would learn to accept her magic along the way) I could even look past the Mary Sueness of her having all the powers by the end. But as soon as she meets the boy, her personality does a 180 and becomes a complete doormat???? Not to mention I hated Matthew's 'alpha wolf pack dominance'. Please, this is not a werewolf romance. So we're humdrumming along, all of a sudden they're madly in love, basically married and she drops the plot point that it's been less than a month. Major love bombing/ manipulative behavior alert! Just gross. Couldn't enjoy any of the book after that tid bit.

Plot
Veeerrryyyy slow and when something actually happens it felt like it only lastest a couple of pages. As if the author was trying to rush through it and not let her characters hurt too much so they could go back to snuggling asap.
It felt like the pacing was way off, the torture scene should have been towards the end of the book (which should have been entirely shorter) and lasted for much much longer to build any semblance of tension.

By the time the climax happens you've still got half the book left. New characters I don't care about are introduced and by the end still didn't really get why they were so quickly integrated into the group. Literal strangers. Cmon people!

In saying that, the entire premise of the story is quite interesting. How these 'creatures' live among us and have always done so. And the author touches on how significant moments in history have been due to creature hijinks was fun.

Writing Style
It was enjoyable enough, which is why I've rated this book so 'highly'. Although I have a bone to pick with the author. Why must every single character be drinking some kind of beverage in literally every scene?? No plot progession can happen unless the witches have their coffee, the vamps have their wine, the daemons have their whiskey, and Diana has her fucking tea. Also why was Diana constantly eating and having second helpings of things? I hope it's a plot point in the second book because it just come of as weird everytime it was mentioned. Also sleeping? Constantly sleeping and eating. Give this girl some agency please!

Long story short. Ah meh story and I won't be picking up the sequel.
