DNF 25%. Could get past the dense writing style with no clear distinctions between past, present, and future. Can’t tell if it was the translation or the original text. I’d pick it up again if another translator took a stab at it.

I really enjoyed this as a way of learning more about Madagascar. It did end quite a bit more abruptly than I was expecting, and didn't seem to have much of an arc, but it was beautiful and interesting to

DID NOT FINISH

DNF, approx. 22%
I very rarely rate a book below three stars, 4 is my average rating.

But I tried several times to get into this book and just couldn't. The story jumps around from the present, to the past, to the ancient past of the Mythology of Madagascar--all within the same chapter. It was hard to keep track of what was happening and when. I would have liked to follow Ietsy the teenager in this bildungsroman, maybe with smatterings of the Mythology/history to tie him to his ancestral name and blood, but it tried to do too much at once. This is coming from someone who was able to keep track of the characters during the first Song of Ice and Fire novel.
slow-paced

What can I say except that it was painful? Was it the translation or the writing? I think a bit of both. Had this not been for a challenge I most likely would have thrown it back. To say I was confused is an understatement

This is somewhat of a coming-of-age story about a boy from Madagascar. A lot of it was the story of the mythology of the Island, but a lot of it was about this privileged child that I absolutely hated. Not being able to connect with the main character, I found myself reading just words and not absorbing much of it.

It took out of my box, not on my TBR at the start so it served its purpose for the challenge. I am happy I know longer have to give it space on my nightstand.

This was a free download on Amazon Prime a few months ago. I didn't really enjoy it. The writing style seemed a bit all over the place as the story seemed to go between present day and the legends of Madagascar. The transition between the two parts were not smooth which made comprehensive a little challenging for me. Reading about the fairy tales/legends was interesting but I didn't like the main character at all so it was hard to relate to him and really get into the story. It was a quick read, though, which I am thankful for.

I wanted to learn more about Madagascar, but couldn't quite follow the back and forth between the legend and the modern story. Maybe I didn't know enough about the place to begin with? And I wasn't thrilled about the overindulged rich boy main plot.

I'm not one to DNF books. I always try to read an entire book regardless about about how I feel about it. I could not finish this one.

I got this as a free book on World Book Day through Kindle. It sounded so promising, and I loved the idea of it being the second book translated from Madagascar.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to follow anything going on from the start. I made it to about the 40% mark before calling it quits. I truly tried but couldn't do it.

I wish I had better things to say because I was excited to dive into this one, but definitely not for me.
