This was cute. I really like the Studio Ghibli movie so I wanted to see how it differed from the book, and I'm happy to say I found it better paced and more interesting narratively, plus it doesn't dwell on the 12-year-olds first love as much as the movie, which was what I liked least about it.

It's alright for a middle-grade, but I'm reading it as the same time as [a:Catherynne M. Valente|338705|Catherynne M. Valente|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1220999852p2/338705.jpg]'s Fairyland series and this one feels terribly simplistic by comparison, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for its intended audience, but I feel it lacked the charm the movie provides visually. It's probably not very fair to be comparing it with other things so much, so take this with a grain of salt.

This was so fun and cute to read. It's just a wholesome time following Kiki and Jiji on their adventures, meeting new characters and watching as Kiki helps the people around her. I will definitely read the second book if I'm in need for a feel-good book and I will recommend it to anybody who liked the movie.
