Safety:
-No cheating between MCs, her ex did cheat multiple times
-Neither were virgins (h was with her ex for 9 years)
-Nothing on H's sexual past, don't think he was a manwhore
-No ow drama
-Om drama: like the blurb said her ex and literally everyone in town want them back together
-Safe sex
-Neither with others during separation
-No epilogue, which is why I lowered the rating

The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male, Bluebonnet #2, by Jessica Clare
Grade: B-

“Just because I am female does not mean I need you to swoop in and be a hero. Sometimes we can save ourselves, you know.”

Colt Waggoner left Bluebonnet, Texas nine years ago and never looked back. Colt tried for years to shake the stigma of being a “white trash Waggoner” his entire life but now that he’s back he can’t seem to get the town to realize he’s changed. When he goes out to help evacuate a festival that go rained out he comes across the town princess Beth Ann Williamson lost in the woods looking for her younger sister. Colt decides to seek revenge on Beth Ann and keep her out in the woods for awhile but he never expected the spoiled girl to be an amazing woman.

Beth Ann Williamson spent nine years of her life trying to be the perfect daughter and girlfriend to her ex Allan and lost who she was. Even though Beth Ann broke up with Allen ten months earlier no one in the town, including Allen, seem to get that she is moving on and becoming her own person. When Beth Ann is sent by her mother to get her sister, she never expected to be stranded with Colt Waggoner but the more time she spends with him the more she likes him. Beth Ann is becoming her own person and Colt might be the man to help her achieve that.

It took me a little while to get into this book but by the end I loved it. This is the second book in the Bluebonnet series but can be read as stand alone with no problem. Beth Ann is your typical queen bee, daughter of the mayor, good girl who smiled when she was told to and stuck by her cheating boyfriend for nine years. Finally Beth Ann has had enough and is doing things for herself and no one else. I will admit that I disliked Beth Ann A LOT when I first started this book but as she got stronger and stood up for herself and what she wanted more the more she grew on me and I found myself cheering for her by the end.

Colt is just yummy and I loved him from the very beginning. I didn’t like that he first started out trying to make Beth Ann suffer a little in the woods or that he lied to her for awhile but he did redeem himself in the end. Colt has a lot of issues with coming from a family that was poor and looked down on in Bluebonnet but I liked seeing him work past the issues but I still felt that he had more to deal with that weren’t talked about or dealt with. I did really enjoy how he brought out a different side of Beth Ann and that he got her to loosen up so much.

I enjoyed this book a lot and my only big issues with it was that the characters repeated themselves a lot and Beth Ann in the beginning. I really hope the next book is Brenna and Grant’s because those two have a lot of sexual tension and I want Grant to be happy again. This was a great contemporary romance and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Bah! This was no good either. I HATE reading not-so-good books back to back. This one started strong. The premise had me. Surviving in the woods for the weekend as a meet-cute. What a good idea! A relationship that starts off as a one-night stand. Yes, yes! I've been into this little small-town Texas romances lately, but this one had no depth. I expected more grit from Colt, the former marine and avid survivalist, but instead I got a dude sort of whiny dude, who doesn't think he's good enough for the town sweetheart because his family was poor. I get that there are class divides, but it wasn't enough to make me care.

Also, ALL of the conflict is predicated on misunderstanding between the two characters and the fact that Beth Ann has an obnoxious lying ex-fiance. Things that could have been easily remedied by talking to each other. Also, the "lies" that Beth Ann gets so upset with Colt about are really just not that big of a deal. No reason for her to think her obsession with having "truth" in a relationship has been violated. Apart from those issues, I liked the story well enough.

The reason I rated it so low is that there are editing issues with the book and it made me really annoyed. There are a number of times where there are obvious inconsistencies that should have been edited out. E.g. Beth Ann gets dressed and purposefully doesn't wear panties. In the next scene (in the same outfit, later that night) Colt pulls the panties that she isn't supposed to be wearing to the side. They are interrupted mid-coitus and then later in the same scene Beth Ann is again no longer wearing panties. Now that is just laziness in the editing department. Don't publish the book if you haven't made sure that it flows. That is just one example, there were multiple instances like this and it grated.

Jessica Clare writes such gosh darn charming books and this was no exception. Lots of fun and the costume choices at the end of the book nearly warranted a fourth star, that scene made me smile so much. Lovely.

good but too many sex scenes, over-saturated.

Suuuuper cute. About a girl who learns to be who she wants to be instead of who everyone expects her to be and the guy who falls in love with her. Who doesn't love that story?

Even better than book one! Colt is one survivalist you would want to be stranded with, even if he is making you walk through mud and sleep in the cold. At least he was willing to heat up the heroine with his body heat. A great addition to the Bluebonnet series, and one that will hook you into wanting more of this small town and colorful occupants.

This left me wondering: Why on earth do I read books like this?

I mean the storyline is thin- if you don't count the string of continuous smut ( albeit good smut it is ). I like the idea of it. The execution however? Uhm... thin at best... *points at previous comment*

The character building has interesting aspects, I kinda like Colt and Beth Ann. But it feels incomplete. I like the crew, but again same issue. Everybody in Bluebonnet seems kinda interesting, but too cliche. It feels like Colts hotness and all that is based completely on his performance in the sack. And yep he defo delivers there, as I said. Good smut. Beth Ann.. well let's just say I liked her way better than in the first book of the series.

The writing, well, that's probably why I read this finished I guess, is good. Clare knows how to write. And let's just spell it out, she knows how to write smut really well. This is definitely smutilious.

BUUUT there lies my issue, I like a wee bit of good smut, but when half the book is just smut, even if it is good smut, I kinda find myself ... bored?...

The bottom line?
I want more than just sex!

I want the feels, depth of character, eloquence and some adventure- naturally I don't frown upon good smut either ;)
Hmmm... So basically I like my romance book the way I like my men...
