I really disliked this book. I had this book sitting on my shelf for about 4 years and finally picked it up to read. I regret that decision.
Really could have done with all the repetitious filler and the abrupt, emotionless ending. It was okay, but I’ve definitely read books targeted at this age range that were much better.
Wowsers was this a devastating book.
I knew when I bought it that it was going to make me have actual Feelings™️ but this really hit me at my core.
The selfishness of the human race, the pointlessness of war and the cruelty of Mother Nature all rolled up in one book.
But there is also hope.
Hope that we can be better as individuals and the human race as a whole.
Trigger warnings for war, animal injuries, animal deaths, loss of limbs (both human and animal), PTSD and domestic abuse.

I began this book not expecting much more than a narrative about a boy and his pet fox, but this story is about so much more. Pax is about the many ways that war can damage families, the toll war can take on our environments and wildlife, knowing ourselves, loss, and ultimately learning what love means. Filled with touching emotion, heart-wrenching and beautiful moments, this is a book that will appeal to middle-grade readers as well as adults. Sensitive readers should be prepared for some graphic depictions of injuries and intense scenes. Highly recommended.

I loved this. It’s a coming of age story so everyone of all ages can appreciative it. It tugs at the heartstrings for sure. Pax and Peter are so bonded this appears parallels of what they are each going through. I think this one will stick with the reader for a long time.

This is a beautiful story. The ending is not as heartbreaking as I feared it would be.
