What about the grandfather?!? Honestly, I worried about him the whole time.
I loved the fox chapters and the way they communicated with each other without going full-cartoon talking animals. Not so sure about the rest of it. The pieces of the book were good, but I don't know that they fit together very well. It was well written, and it will surely make some of my sixth graders cry. I see other people mentioning The One and Only Ivan here, and that book is still my #1 animal tale at the moment.

Beautifully written, this story of a love between a boy and a fox is wonderful. Full of humanity, courage and wisdom, I would recommend it for all ages.
I read this for the Read Harder prompt “a book about a beloved pet where the pet doesn’t die.” Pax reminded me of My Side of the Mountain, with a bit more darkness to it. I loved the observations about the “war sick” and the reflections on wildness, home, and healing.
This. Book. Was. SO GOOD.
The illustrations? The story? WOW, amazing.
I just love it.

This book. Wow. I'm not sure I have the words to describe how amazing it is. Just read it, you'll be very glad you did, no mater your age.
was meh to me, but my daughter really liked it. I was frustrated with the writing, the lack of details (there's a war, but not enough specifics to place the war, no identification of time period or even location) and the ending was mediocre. I don't recommend this one honestly.
Broke my heart a dozen times. Such a (bitter)sweet coming of age story.
This was a strange one.... I had high hopes as I heard everyone loved it. All my kids at school loved it, but it was too odd for me.
3.5 stars - this was a very beautiful story in a lot of ways, I preferred the fox’s story… but I’m confused about who the intended audience is. it’s categorized as “middle grade” & I think it’s language is appropriate for that level, but the subject matter is so, so heavy, in several ways - war, abandonment, a dead parent, an emotionally abusive parent, death & even some light gore. it’s hard to imagine a child reading & enjoying this independently.
