This was a fun picture book with a miscommunication troupe. I don't usually love that troupe, but it wasn't done maliciously, and I loved it for that.

I'd like to think of this as malicious compliance meets housework, but let's face it, Amelia's probably not bright enough for that. Not really that entertaining, and stretching credulity at points I think (putting the lightbulbs outside, for example), but two things redeem it: the lemon meringue pie, because no-one who bakes well can be all bad. And the drawing of the dressed chicken in its little box, which got a genuine laugh out of me. Also, what lazy-arse employer can't measure 2 cups of rice on her own?

It wasn't until Little Bug was about six that she started to get Amelia Bedelia. It's one of the most hilarious children's series' out there, but you really do have to have a pretty good vocabulary to understand all of Amelia Bedelia's foibles.

Silly books! A delight for kids to read alone and for adults to read with them.

The amount of frustration I had reading these books still lingers with me today

I remember really loving these books when I was a kid. My kids really liked the book, too. Some of the expressions I had to explain what they meant, but once the kids saw the difference between what Amelia was supposed to do and what she actually did, they thought it was really funny.

I like this review of it so much http://super-grammaticam.blogspot.com.au/2013/10/amelia-bedelia-womans-place-is-in.html that I am going to assume I liked the book as a child because I instinctively felt the irony and transgressiveness below the surface. Otherwise I can't defend the way I used to devour these and roll around laughing my head off
