I think this was a great book! I can’t wait to watch the movie and start the next book! I didn’t like so much how it ended, but it was a fantastic book!

I love this series much so that I go back and reread it all the time
If I hadn't seen the movie, I doubt I would have liked this book. But...I have and I did. I think the movie did a better job of giving the characters more depth and making them more likeable, but it was a cute, easy book to read. I was surprised to see the book has more John Ambrose McClaren, which made me excited to watch the sequel.

I'm going to divide my review into five different sections: plot, world building, character development, editing, and overall enjoyment. This review is spoiler free.
Plot (3.5 out of 5 stars): The plot was definitely not at all what I was expecting it to be, but I didn't find it to be original. I basically felt like I was reading The Summer I Turned Pretty again (and I was like 13 when I read that). These typical young adult romance tropes were enjoyable when I was 13 and just starting to get into the genre, but now I find that it is overdone and boring. Lara Jean is a good girl who gets good grades and has never had a boyfriend and loves her family? What a surprise.
World Building (2 out of 5 stars): The world wasn't really that memorable. I know it was some generic town in the United States (in New York maybe? I honestly have no idea), and she went to a generic high school, and she lived in suburbia. Lara Jean seemed to have spent a lot of time in her house.
Character Development (3.5 out of 5 stars): I enjoyed the character development of some secondary characters, but Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky seemed pretty flat to me. I enjoyed Margot and Kitty's character development. We really got to see them grow and change their ways of thinking, while Lara Jean stayed the same throughout the story. Here also seems to be a good point for me to say that I think Chris was an absolutely pointless character and I hated her. She was in like two scenes and seemed to just treat Lara Jean like garbage.
Editing (4 out of 5 stars): I thought the story flowed well and was edited well, I was just frustrated with its ending.
Overall Enjoyment (3 out of 5 stars): Something that I'm left thinking about is why the hell was this made into a series? It could've easily been made into a standalone. Romance series really have no appeal to me because there isn't really more world to build, more characters to introduce, etc. It just seems like "let's milk this into three books so we can make more money"
If I find the following books for a good price, I may continue, but I'm not going to make it a priority.

Challenged myself to read this in a day and succeeded!
Reading this after watching the film years ago I felt as if the characters in the book were a lot more nuanced. Little personality quirks and flaws were explored more and I liked the family dynamics. Was definitely not rooting for either of the guys in the love triangle by the end though. Jean Lara ending up with Josh would not be fair to Margot but Peter is not a good match for her - they fight all the time and the little things they do annoy each other. Can’t remember the second and third movies but hoping John Ambrose McClaren comes through clutch.
