I picked up this book last night because it was the monthly read for the APUS R.E.A.D. book club. I finished it tonight. So, this obviously an action packed read, leading me to finish it at a fast pace.
What I love about this book though, is the way it celebrates airline culture and pays respect to everyone who works to make it happen.
Even though I myself never fly (at this point in my life) my grandfather was a pilot, my brother is a pilot, and my sister in law a flight attendant. The people who do this work are passionate about it. One of my favorite parts of this book is when a character talked about the five weeks of intense training flight attendants go through- they are not there to serve drinks. They are there to protect passengers.
My only hesitancy with this book is with the antagonists. On one hand, I really like that the author fleshed them out more, and tried to bring attention to current world issues. I do remember when our Kurdish allies were abandoned. There was some coverage and outrage, and then the press and people moved on. Bringing back attention to what happened is good, but I do not know about making the antagonists immigrants from that country, it seems to feed into a stereotype. And when the character stated he wanted our country to mourn for once, it just doesn't seem to fit well in present day when there are mass shootings every couple of months that we constantly just move on from.
That is just my personal thoughts so far, and maybe I should not think so deep about it. It was a fun read, and got me out of my book slump.
fast-paced

As a flight attendant myself, I absolutely loved knowing the authors background as well as a lot of the aviation talk mentioned in the book.

This book had my attention from beginning to end and really accentuated the fact that us flight attendants are not just Diet Coke machines and door mats for you to walk all over. I felt as if I’ve worked with flight attendants just like Jo, Kellie and Big Daddy… and also pilots like Bill and the good sides of Ben! So it was easy to picture this all playing out in my head.

In a weird way that’s hard to explain, I also loved the depth of the terrorists and showing their pain and background, too. As an American myself, I would agree with them in the way that we are ignorant to places and things “not relevant” to us and are, more often than not, privileged. I liked that it brought light to the saying, “it shouldn’t have to happen to us for it to matter to us.”

I just really enjoyed this book all around and would recommend to my friends, especially fellow aviators.

Based on how the book started, I honestly thought this would be a five star read. The first sentence is “When the shoe fell into her lap the foot was still in it”. WHAT?!?!? The entire first chapter is so graphic and detailed and set an amazing scene for how I thought the book would play out.

But I think how good that first chapter was made the rest of the book underwhelming. The characters were cliche, every moment of the entire scenario was predictable, and when the action started picking up at the end, it got so ridiculous I started laughing (at one point, there’s a scene that’s even reminiscent of the musicians deciding to continue playing as the boat sunk
