The end of this book made me weep. Going through a faith crisis & leaving a high demand religion feels like the foundation of your life is crumbling under your feet. It’s the most freeing & terrifying process that has truly defined my life. I would not be where I am today without the stories of others who have gone through similar things. Reading this book broke my heart & healed it at the same time.

“I have not finished my quest for truth. It is continuous & joyous. Old ideas crumple as new truths are revealed through rigorous questioning.”
“All things did work together for my good, but not automatically. I had to choose to create good from it & turn my traumas into strength.”
“Our susceptibility to cults comes from our desire to have a source; an authority to tell us what to do & what is true.”
“I’m doing this for those who have been oppressed, manipulated, & abused & need the words to stand up for themselves.”

What a story.  Definitely taking a minute here to be born into a pretty normal family.

I really disliked the shade Ms. Jones threw at what I assume is Monterey Peninsula College.  Like it may be a community college but it did advance your learning and goals.  Save that shade for the pedophilia ring that called itself christians.

The last chapter or two felt a little off kilter to me, but otherwise a very interesting memoir. Major TW for pedophilia and sexual abuse.

It’s always hard to rate someone’s personal account of trauma. Do I think it could have been edited and pieced together better? Absolutely. But am I going to rate low because of the way someone felt inclined to share their story? Absolutely not. This story is full of childhood trauma. I’m not sure why people have complained in reviews that they thought this would be “about a cult not just a bunch of childhood trauma”.
Those people need to read the room and stop talking.

The insight to what it’s like growing up in this crazy ass religious cult is astounding. It’s disgusting, hard to read at times, and humbling. The multiple similarities between growing up as an evangelical Christian baptist in the Bible Belt and the children of God are despicable and honestly not surprising. I felt a strong connection to the author and I’m so beyond happy she was able to find her way. Cheers to undoing years of childhood trauma!

Reading this was incredibly uncomfortable. Jones’s experience in The Family International was harrowing and disturbing  to say the least. I had a knot in my stomach the whole time.

I don’t rate memoirs, which is why there’s no rating here.
