This was a short and enjoyable read about a small community that grows from a vacant lot transforming into garden space. Every chapter is a different character and their perspective of how they came to be associated with the community. Almost every story was of BIPOC and immigrant backgrounds with cultural roots leading to their connection with the new community garden. There was disability representation, grief processing, relationship transformations - all kinds of topics of humanity were lightly touched on. It was lovely to see a community take care of each other in such a simplistic yet impactful novel.

I've worked on this text with many middle and high school ESL students. The book works well for their learning context and seems to be pretty engaging. The book centers around a garden in low-income community. It very much perpetuates the "melting pot" myth, a weakness that could be leveraged as a strength if teachers make room for critique in their lesson.

Book loses stars for race-based stereotypes portrayed in characters. Similarly, it wasn’t the most fluid read.

Y’all know I love a garden, so the gardening community that started with one person and began to flourish in the middle of the city made me smile. I appreciated the accounts that detailed the garden and the community through every season.
Not mad that I read this, but this is one you can skip with a clean conscious.

So cute and so wholesome!! Very nostalgic to when I read it the first time in elementary school! I’m gonna read this book with my middle school garden clubs :)
