4.5/5

It was anticlimactic for me.

danaeleigh97's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

I made it through the first two and about half of this one and honestly, the main character just annoys me. She whines a lot and talks over the other characters. The world building could have been phenomenal but I feel like this book got stuck on the dialogue and that's just not my favorite style of writing.

This series overall was 3 ⭐️ but this book was just lacking it for me.

Overall series rating: 2 irritated stars

Well. I am so bewildered, I don't even know where to start. While I liked the first book of the series a lot (and LOVED Dark Elements), it went downhill fast with Rage and Ruin—and Grace and Glory was outright bad. Like in REALLY REALLY BAD. I just finished it out of pure stubbornness.

Early into the second book, Zane didn't even feel like a person anymore. He was just a hollow, stereotypical shell, a faceless extra for Trinity to point all her pent up hormones / unhealthy obsession at. And their dialogues were so unbelievably cringey! At one point I might have screamed in frustration because Trinity just kept on and on and ON pointing out that Zane "always says the right stuff" and generally worshipped the floor he walked on. They both were so overly sweet and constantly gushing at one another, it made me want to claw at my eyes. And all the kissing? Literally every kiss was SO VERY special that it presented Trinity with feelings and sensations that apparently had to be depicted meticulously EVERY FUCKING TIME. (I know, I'm just rambling at this point, but rrrooooar! I need to vent!)

So let me list some of the countless other issues I had (spoiler ahead):

  • • Sulien. What a waste of a character.
  • •The
    Spoilerpreggers trope
. OH MY. JLA, what is it with you, needing to pull that shit with nearly every h you write? And could you please stop? It already got old the first time.
  • • Peanut being
    Spoilerher father
, I mean, NO. Just no.
  • • The waste of Layla, Roth and Cayman. It was heartbreaking to see them reduced to some extras who aided the story whenever it was convenient without contributing to it. Or even being their awesome selves.
  • • The senator
Spoilercasually showing up at the right time and revealing Gabriel's whereabouts
. If you ever want to read a story literally consisting of deus ex machinas, go ahead and give Grace and Glory a try.
  • • Trinity. I went three whole books without knowing Trinity's last name, and THATS what you put into the last few paragraphs? GAH.
  • • Lucifer.
SpoilerIt was not even mentioned that SHE appearantly decided to switch genders recently, THE BOSS is suddenly a guy and doesn't even like her favorite anymore.
That was just irritating, why not use this phenomenal chance to put some flesh on the character?

It felt like JLA just went with the flow, no planning, no plotting, no worldbuilding, no character development, no heart, no soul. And last, but not least: NO EDITING. The whole story was repetitive and all over the place, with facts strewn along the way every time it was convenient for another lame twist or revelation, and a shit ton of details no one needed. And none of it was remotely believable.

In the end, literally NOTHING happened in the span of three books. Except for five fights or so. It was mind-numbingly boring.

Notes:

"Why do you have to always say the right stuff, Zayne?"
Yeah, Zane, why? It's so annoying! Almost as annoying as her pointing that out every five seconds.

“You’re doing it again.” “Doing what?” “Saying the right stuff.”
For the love of god! PLEASE make it stop.

“I am not worthy of you.” “That’s the farthest thing from the truth.” “It’s not. You’re brave and strong. Fearless. You’re intelligent, kind and loyal.” His large hands slid to my hips. “You’re breathtaking.” He kissed my neck, and I shuddered. “I want you, now and always.”
Le sigh. Whats with the cheesiness?

His gaze was zeroed in on me, and it was always like that whenever I spoke, even before. It was like I was the only person in his world.
[Insert groan right here]

Why do you have to be so special?”
Yeah. Time for another groan.

“Why do you have to be so good?
o_O

“But there has to be a place you’d prefer.” “Where you are is where I prefer.”
I swear I'm gonna puke

The rawness of the kiss left me breathless as need and love and a thousand other crazy, wonderful sensations pounded through me.
Yeah I think we got it now, every kiss is so speshul it makes you feel things

He kissed me softly, sending a shiver dancing down my spine.
Another kiss giving you sensations? Shocker.

He pulled the shirt on over his head, and I didn’t know if I should be disappointed or grateful.
Girl, your guy has a body. You know it. WE know it. Now can we please get over it already?

Content Warnings: language, sexual content

So, this book felt like a good place to end this series. I don't know if the author plans on adding anymore, if she does I can see how it can be tied in, if not, I wouldn't be unsatisfied.

This was a quick read, made more so by the fact I could listen to the audiobook while at work.

What I liked about the book was the character voices felt strong and distinct. I think there were a lot of original ideas coming to work that made everything all the more engaging.

I did feel like the humor and jokes were forced, but that was just me.

All around a great series. Loved it. But the amount of times i read “you’re doing it again” “doing what?” “Saying the right things”/“being perfect” was so fucking annoying. Also things like ‘thank you baby alpacas everywhere’ etc was annoying. Also the obsession with pregnancy?? Like what? It was completely unnecessary.

More like 3.5, there was a lot standing around and talking and not a lot of action. Things got good when Lucifer showed up, which then it was amusing, and the “standing around and talking” started to actually be amusing.
