I didn’t hear any of it but Reid was a BIG fan and couldn’t stop listening. He had head phones on and at one point couldn’t help himself and exclaimed “Wow! That was a really good part!” There are apparently little stories within the story and the other day he forgot one of the stories was part of the larger book and thought we had read it together and while trying to get me to remember told me the whole thing word for word then was like “OH I remember! It’s in When the sea turned to Silver!” And slapped his forehead

What a wonderful new story by Grace Lin. It is a little darker than her book When the Mountain Meets the Moon, but just as much fun. It is full of smaller folk/fairy tales intermixed with the larger story. This is a great book for middle schoolers, and another winner from Grace!
p.s. Some characters from her previous novel(s), make a guest appearance!

This was scarier than the first 2 books for my 7 1/2 year old. Certainly it was darker. And it was complicated, with many threads that weave together in a way that he didn't totally catch when he read most of the book by himself. He will need to read the book again with me soon, or by himself later when he's a little older, to catch the full depth of this book.

This is our third book in this series we have read. A lot of chapters but so many fun stories and exciting characters. My kids ranged from its ok to they loved it.
The story kinda jumped around a bit, but I rather like the lesson.
This is an excellent addition to Grace Lin's lovely set of books that take place in Ancient China. Lin brought elements from [b:Where the Mountain Meets the Moon|5983694|Where the Mountain Meets the Moon|Grace Lin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1344265026s/5983694.jpg|6157354] and [b:Starry River of the Sky|13521501|Starry River of the Sky|Grace Lin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1347592144s/13521501.jpg|19082177] together in this story. What's truly brilliant is that you don't have to read those two books to enjoy and fully understand this one. They are a rich layer for those who have, but the book stands well on its own too. Pinmei and Yishan are my favorite heroes of this set. They complemented each other so well. As I've come to expect from Lin, the setting was rich and lovely, all the characters important, and the way the plot wove together was magical.
Lovely!
As with all of Ms. Lin's works, the words are crafted as carefully as the luminous artworks she adds. I think of the three novels, this is now my favorite.

I am such a fan of Grace Lin's books! She has become very important to my family as she writes books with Chinese children as the main characters, and Chinese folklore as the main storyline. Getting to pass these books down to my daughter is such a delight.
