Similar in style to her earlier books--I suppose they form a trilogy?--Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky, the story of two Chinese children is interwoven with fairytales told by one of the kids, PinMei, or by her grandmother, Amah, The Storyteller. And eventually the kids meet characters from those fairytales in an exciting adventure, as they journey to find a "luminous stone" that they hope will convince the nasty Emperor to release Amah from custody. Nice story and interesting setting, especially the time period of the Great Wall being under construction. Fun surprises in store, too. Sadly because I listened to it on audio, I didn't get to see the illustrations, so I'll be checking out the print version soon to see what I missed.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the journey it took me on and all of the stories within the book. I will definitely read Lin's other books.

Great book. Love the story telling. Read: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin first. This is a sequel, though it stands alone, it's that much richer having read the first book. Read this aloud with my daughter and we both loved it.

I'm not sure if the problem was me or the book, but I had a harder time following this one than previous installments. Still enjoyed reading it and it still had some really beautiful moments, but I wonder if I needed to have read the first two more recently (I think, like the first two, it is not a sequel but a companion story and I had a harder time remembering which characters I was supposed to already know) to appreciate it fully.
