Another magical story by Grace Lin.
The prose is beautiful, the illustrations are illuminating, and Grace Lin's ability to weave together multiple stories with the run-through plot is unmatched. She remains firmly in the spot of top middle grade writer in my rankings. An absolutely magical tale that completely engulfs the reader into its world.

I read this for the Book Riot 2017 Read Harder Challenge for a 'fantasy novel'
This book definitely wasn't my usual cup of tea, but it was very nice to stretch myself and read this middle grade fantasy novel. I think if I read this when I was younger I would have been obsessed with it. It had such beautiful illustrations and Chinese folktales it truly was a fantastic diversion from my normal.

What a beautiful story! I loved Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, and somehow this one was even better.
While I very much enjoyed this, I find it to be much darker than the other two books - in fact, much too dark. It felt very inconsistant in that regard. However, I think this would be a good book for any transitioning from Middle Grade to YA.
Onto the story, it was mostly a very satisfying finale to the trilogy. My main complaint is that it felt fairly obvious that Amah was Minli, but it never actually said so, not to mention that it only vaguely stated, which may be confusing to a less mindful reader. Otherwise, it was extremely fun and exciting and is sure to keep the reader hooked on every word.
I think this book would be loved by any who enjoyed [b:Prince Caspian|1045090|Prince Caspian (Chronicles of Narnia, #4)|C.S. Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562776198l/1045090._SX50_.jpg|3348636] or really any old children's fantasy novel. It has a sort of Disney-ish feel to it. If you liked this book and are transitiong to YA, I would suggest [b:The Kingdom of Back|34213299|The Kingdom of Back|Marie Lu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562771392l/34213299._SY75_.jpg|55261587].

I loved the scope of this beautiful novel. I did have a hard time holding the threads together at the end, but the writing was terrific.
This was my first read by Grace Lin, and I really enjoyed how she was able to interweave these old stories into the plot. There were also twists that I could guess before hand but also I few I would've never guessed. I also really enjoyed how Lin included small viewpoints from The Black Tortoise of Winter, really I enjoyed seeing all the viewpoints throughout the story.

This book is another feel-good story about a little girl who finds her voice while on a journey to save her grandmother. It is like a sequel to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon in that some characters are repeated and it was nice to have that background knowledge. However, it is a stand alone and can be read without reading the first one for pure enjoyment. I found it a little less exciting than the first book, but a joy to read nonetheless.
Really just about 2.5. For the right people this could be awesome ~a sad case of it’s me, not the book itself~but I did not like the story format and found it extremely slow paced for a middlegrade fantasy. Interrupting the story for so MANY little fairy tales (even if they all connected at the end) just drove me nuts. I kept wanting to skip over them....
