4.5. Super good!

Beautiful book, much like the other Grace Lin book I've read filled with stories within the story. I'll be surprised if this doesn't win the National Book Award

Similar to her other book, "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon," this novel contains a number of Chinese folktales sprinkled in to support the main story arc. I enjoyed this a bit more than her first one, perhaps because the story's "villain" is more of human, and therefore seems like a more classic type of challenge to face. The tales are told effectively but succinctly, which makes them very accessible and easy to remember later on. A really good read, I am guessing even for people who are unfamiliar with Chinese fairy tales.

I loved how the author intertwined the storytellers’ stories and events of the book. I couldn’t put it down once I reached the halfway point!

The girls and I loved this book! It was a great end to the series. One of our favorites so far. I love her style of writing. She uses so many similes and metaphors that make her writing beautiful and imaginative.

This whole series is beyond gorgeous, and the storytelling is perfection, somehow both timeless and modern. We listened to the audio version (the reader was WHOA AMAZING), but we referenced the hard copy simultaneously, since a big part of the magic of these books is in the enchanting artwork (done by the author, who is clearly a wizard). I just really love these books, and my kids said it was fun to realize how many Chinese folktales they already knew from other sources. Highly recommend!

I love the layering of stories in this book. Plus the Chinese mythology is fascinating.

I enjoyed this book the most of the series. The elegant way it ties the narrative together from all the books was very fun. My students love discovering pieces of Rendí and Minli throughout this.
