This was incredible! This is a great true crime / mystery because there is no extraneous information presented that we didn’t need, but there were no plot holes to be filled. The depth of description is flawless, and the prose was incredible. The premise reminds me a lot of True Detective, but better and easier to understand. Titus may be one of my favorite MMCs in a book to date. A six star read. Absolutely no notes.
4.5 Stars
Well-written thriller set in a small Virginia town.
After an officer-involved shooting with a school-shooter, the town is left reeling, but our MC has only scratched the surface of the reasoning behind it all.
Like all; and I do mean ALL; small towns, there are dark secrets and even darker memories. Folk just figure if they don't say nothing and ignore it, it will go away. It doesn't. It festers and oozes until disease spreads forth. Our townsfolk found that out the hard way, and as a reader, I enjoyed every moment of it.
This is one of those stories where you want a series; just so you can follow this character and the world created.
Highly recommended!

This was good.. but I was waiting for it to be great. Don’t get me wrong- I love S.A. Cosby. I love the way he writes, I love that his books are so grounded in reality, I love how much research obviously goes into his writing, and I love his characters. But something about this one didn’t click for me like his other book did. I think I had trouble connecting with the main character, the Sheriff was so wooden at times(which tracked for his character) but that made it hard for me as a reader to sympathize with him. I also found it to be very repetitive at times. One of the major themes of the book is the stronghold of racism in the south, especially in small communities, and while I appreciate that Cosby may not have wanted to leave any room for misinterpretation of that message- it started to feel like that point was being reiterated just for the sake of saying it. By that, I’m not referring to the actions of the characters or any plot points, the narrator just went on the same spiel about being a black sheriff in the south which, after so many examples were given throughout the book, started to feel like overkill.
