This collection really stands out for the first five issues, "The Rise of the Alpha Flight" in which both the art by Kris Anka and the story by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters excel. The witty conflict between Carol Danvers and Abigail Brand is an awesome example of a well-developed female duo of unique, empowering individuals. In fact, the entire plot of "Alpha Flight" feels like a refreshing step into grounded, fun, multicultural feminine awesomeness.

Alpha Flight Team

One thing I really appreciate about this set is Anka's artwork, which renders Captain Marvel as athletic and realistic, with a silhouette that is decidedly not pinup. It really spoiled me when I had to view other artists' renderings of Carol as a 10-heads-tall wisp with a bust that hadn't seen a sports bra since the patriarchy began.

Enjoyed a lot of it but the overall story (taken from several different series) was tough to follow. I was very happy every time the cat showed up. Spider-Woman's bare-midriff space suit took me RIGHT out of it.

Got better as it went. I felt like the team was figuring out who Danvers was through telling her tale. Could have used more dinosaurs.

Two issues wrap-up the current storyline, one deals with a crossover I haven't read, and the last one is a bittersweet ending to the run.

I thought it was all resolved a bit quick and I'm a bit disappointed in that, even though I understand that they had to make room for the Secret Wars crossover. I did really, really like the last issue though.

I'm looking forward to seeing Carol again in A-Force, and I'll probably get her other Secret Wars run too, just because I like Kelly Sue DeConnick's work so much.

Really weak, uneven collection with 5 issues of Captain Marvel and a random assortment of appearances in other books (two issues of which she barely makes an appearance in). A compelling argument against forcing all of Marvel's books to participate in crossovers.
