Mind-blowing. I seldom read short stories collections where all of the stories resonate with me in some way, yet Men Without Women was one of those collections. Haruki Murakami’s beautiful development of characters and intense and unique imagery made this such an exquisite group of short stories that I will never forget. I also adored the classic Murakami references to cats, jazz and American culture.
como eu AMEI esses contos principalmente Kino, yesterday e órgão independente. eu amaria conhecer uma história mais aprofundada de kino, ele poderia fazer um romance desse enredo. Acabou q o conto que deu o título para essa coletânea, homens sem mulheres, foi o que eu menos gostei, achei muito simplista e tedioso mas ao menos conferiu esse título.

Short story collections are normally hard for me to read, but this flowed quite smoothly. It was easy and captivating, but at the same time, I felt like there was still something missing.
Vintage Murakami-cool skates through these 7 stories about men in isolation & the women who haunt them. “Drive My Car” (the basis for the movie) follows a widowed actor & his laconic female chauffeur as he reveals his wife’s infidelities. “Scheherazade” takes the Arabian Nights to Tokyo as a caretaker tells post-sex stories to a homebound man. In the tiresome “Samsa in Love,” a bug wakes up to discover he’s metamorphosed into a Gregor Samsa. I don’t try solving Murakami’s detective-stories-of-the-heart. He’s all about atmosphere & tone. But his passive males—whiskey-sipping, Beatles-&-jazz worshipping, never-short-on-bed-partners—leave me cold.
De laatste 3 short-stories hebben mijn hart. I mean, wie wil er nu geen hervertelling van The Metamorphosis of een verhaal over mannen zonder vrouwen (met trouwens één van de beste beeldspraak die ik ooit heb gelezen)

"Don't look away, look right at it," someone whispered in his ear. "This is what your heart looks like." The willow branches swayed in the early summerbreeze. In a small dark room, somewhere inside Kino, a warm hand was reaching out to him. Eyes shut, he felt that hand on his, soft and substantial. He'd forgotten this, had been apart from it for far too long. Yes, I am hurt. Very, very deeply. He said this to himself. And he wept. In that dark, still room.

2,5 star would be more accurate. Not bad but nothing special either. Despite the different settings and characters, the atmosphere and motives are the same. After the first three stories I had the feeling I read them all. Not Murakami at his best.

The first 3 stories were pretty bland compared the rest, but it really picked up. Kino was my favorite. Men Without Women made me tear up.
