What an interesting read. I always enjoy the interplay between Emily and Colin. It is like visiting old friends. The story was interesting because you end up wondering who the victim is. Is it the kidnapper or the person held captive.
I liked this much more than some of the other more recent Lady Emily's. This may be because there is less of the children, more detecting and an intriguing and different mystery. I'm not always a massive fan of the inset chapters featuring the victim that Alexander has been using recently, but in this book it works very well.
I'm still trying to work out why I like some of these books more than others - I can't isolate the elements that make a good Lady Emily as opposed to an OK one.
I did really like the tribute to Elizabeth Peters at the end of this - although it also reminded me how consistently good the Amelia Peabody and Vicky Bliss books were.

This very well might be my favorite Lady Emily book yet. The series certainly gets better with each book.

enjoyable. while I saw the end way before the story got there, I enjoyed the simplicity a bit. fun read.
Lady Emily is once again embroiled in a mystery. This time, she's at a fancy dress party where the famous female traveler, Estella, is supposed to appear. As an old friend of Cecile's (Lady Emily's good friend), they're all excited to see the explorer. Except, when they finally meet the explorer, Cecile is shocked to realize the woman at the party is not her long-lost-friend. And the next day, the pretender turns up dead.
Intercut with chapters of Lady Emily and her husband investigating the murder are chapters detailing what, exactly happened to Estella. She was an important character in the book andshe was an absolute trip.
This book confused me at first because I thought I was reading the next in the series, but I had actually skipped a few books in the series. However, I was able to pick right up and enjoy this book.
