At this point, I’m used to the fact that we swing back and forth between two stories/points of view that will eventually merge. I did feel like the conclusion was obvious pretty early on. What’s odd is that the reason for the murder is so sloppy. No plan. It was an accident?!?! That’s what we get after reading a story that transpired over the course of twenty years?

Also, we start with the event of “the season” and Emily’s best friend isn’t even mentioned?

If I wasn’t whipping through these books in 24 hours, I think I’d give up.

It's funny how books align with the same subjects, even when you're consciously trying to pick different things. I had no idea this book would be chock-full of Dickens references. So, we can add this one to my ongoing Dickens phase. One of the characters is also based on one of my heiresses from Women of Means. Overall, this is a straightforward mystery from the Lady Emily series. As I've said with other series books I read, by the ninth book, you know what you're getting. You know if you want to deal with Colin and Emily's flirting like they are Nick and Nora Charles in Victorian England. I do enjoy how the series has pivoted to them as a couple of sleuths, instead of Emily being her stubborn self.

I continue to enjoy this series. The author alternated viewpoints between Lady Emily, the main protagonist, and Estella, the subject of Lady Emily's investigation. The multiple viewpoints kept the story fresh and me turning pages. The strategy worked for this particular story.

I didn't love this one as much as others. I think the mystery was a bit too creepy. But I always love Lady Emily and her crew. I enjoyed Tasha's nod to Amelia Peabody another favorite character of mine.

I love this series, and I particularly enjoyed this installment of the series. The author continues to find ways to keep both the characters and the world they live in fresh for a reader.

This book has two stories that run sort of parallel although they are intertwined, and both of the plots here held my attention completely as I listened to this [I got it as an audio book and the narrator is excellent!]. I found myself totally engrossed in the stories and with the characters in both timelines.

I love Lady Emily and her charming and - if we are to believe everyone around Emily - absolutely gorgeous husband Colin. They are a great couple and have a laudable equal relationship which is seriously unusual for the time they live in. I love the interplay between them - it always charms me!

I also adore the supporting characters in Emily's world, particularly her best friend Cecile, and her suitor turned pal Jeremy. They are both characters of the first order, and add plenty of snap and sparkle to the adventures of Emily's that they participate in.

I also really enjoyed the parallel storyline of the missing heiress Estella that everyone is searching for, and whose own story we learn in snippets of alternating chapters. I really enjoyed the way that past and present were woven together, and how things dovetailed as small facts became clear or more important as the investigation goes on, and as we learn more about what really happened to Estella.

Truthfully, this wasn't a big mystery, as I figured out where things were going fairly early on, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. This was a well-plotted, cleverly intertwined double story that I found very entertaining. I enjoyed this a lot and will continue with this series.

This is such a wonderful series! I would wish they came out more frequently, but that would hurt the writing too much. Thoroughly researched and utterly charming!

Enjoyable. You think she's keeping you guessing about one thing, which is straightforward and easy to figure out, but instead it's pleasantly surprising to find that she's keeping you guessing about something else, which I only slowly saw coming.
