This is my first book by this author. I discovered it while shopping at Darville’s on Orcas Island on my 20th anniversary trip. I was recovering from COVID and wanted to read something about nature since I couldn’t hike as vigorously as I normally would have. I learned a lot about bark beetles. Also, I thought at first that I would write that the writing style is a little too conversational, but then I read the epilogue which tells of the author’s journey from a dry description to a more emotional one. I appreciate his metamorphosis.

The book started very interesting but gradually became duller as it went on. Also, I found that the author did not use enough scientific sources for me to fully believe what he said in some chapters, such as the claim that wildfires are bad for forests. I feel as though I got several key pieces of information from this book but it could have been 50 pages shorter, even when it is already only 250 pages long.

A pleasant and informative read (with facts and opinions combined), though ‘The Hidden Life of Trees, Continued’ would have been a more accurate title.

Some garbled sentences in the English translation.

Didn't agree with conclusions. "Leaving nature alone to restore itself" ignores the many ways indigenous people have impacted the environment in positive ways and the current problem of invasive species. Humans have been a part of the environment for millions of years as well, altering and changing it in both negative and positive ways for many different species.
