This was a hard book to read, but wow, was it great. With just enough humor sprinkled in to make the horror digestible, Manhunt left me feeling deeply unsettled. I'm newer to the horror genre, so this was a lot to handle, but the story and characters were so beautifully written that it made the discomfort worth it.

I figured this would be the best bet for a gender chromosome hormone apocalypse depiction that I could get behind, and it did address all the stuff that irks me about other versions (discusses how it affects trans people ofc, but also things like pcos). Unfortunately I didn't really find myself immersed in the writing but I'm not 100% sure why. I guess the style didn't click with me or maybe because it didn't focus as much on aspects of the genre I most connect to, like body horror.

I constantly kept losing track of which POV the story was in at any time. I attributed this to the narrator not pausing long enough between scene breaks, but I see that has come up in reviews of the physical book as well. I think the character voices (not the narrator's but the author's ) blurred together.

There's just something about the metaphor of
trans women surviving by eating cis men's testes
that is just so interesting but yeah... the book was okay, but I didn't love it like I was hoping for.

This book was a wild ride. By the time I reached it on my TBR pile, I had completely forgotten the premise and was totally blindsided by the plot. That being said, this is a great gory post apocalyptic read. An insightful commentary on current issues facing the queer and especially trans community in the world today, but dialed up to 100 in a world where pleasantries and saving face don’t exist. TERFs run rampant and the rich do as they please with no hint of accountability. Like many other reviews said, it is very sexually explicit and full of graphic violence. The sexual content seems focused towards the beginning, so if you can get through the first third of the book, it tapers off as events progress. If that’s not your cup of tea, give this one a skip.

I greatly enjoyed the gossip about what happened to celebrities in the apocalypse and the gratifying end to a certain public figure. There’s nothing like fantasy literary justice for a previously beloved author with a fatal flaw.

My main problem was the structure, it felt hard to follow the various POV shifts with so many characters and conflicting interests. I wish it had focused on one or two characters in order to better follow their inner development.

I almost seemed to lose interest right when the plot started to unravel. There’s just a bit too much going on in the end there. It feels over complicated for no good reason.

Despite some lagging in the plot, the characterization and world-building is phenomenal, and the exploration of gender politics and transphobia is nuanced and unabashed.
