I'm currently reading Fly by night by Frances Hardinge. This is the first book in the Fly by night duology. Listening to the audiobook for my Series TBR. Reading this for the Buzzwordathon with the prompt: Verbs
Very much not far into this, so can't really say a lot about it. But I love the writing. I just love this author's writing and that is apparant again in this book. Excited to see where the story will go from here, it is interesting so far.
I didn't like the story in the end. It was not very interesting to me. I do really love the writing of this author, so will read the second book and more books from the author.

You know you're in for an adventure picking up any of Frances Hardinge's books and Fly By Night is no exception! Brilliantly written with the typically off-the-wall sense of humour and crazy imagination that pervades all her books, this one was slightly less...shall we say 'weird'? than some of the others like The Lie Tree and A Face Like Glass, simply because it was set in a world that roughly equates to ours. It had a number of similarities in the politics and way the characters are written to Terry Pratchett's Discworld so any of his fans would definitely love Fly By Night.
Needless to say, I've already purchased her new book 'Deeplight' without even reading the blurb - now it's just a choice as to whether I read that or the sequel to Fly By Night first!

This is so boring. Nothing exciting has happened to keep my attention. The characters are bland and the narration is atrocious.

too gobbledygook and honestly a little childish for me. i have so many other things to read that would interest me more so i decided against it! i may come back to it someday.
The premise is a little more interesting than the actual book. The protagonists aren't particularly likable. The plot is a somewhat intriguing, but not terribly exciting. I suppose my expectations should be lower for a young-adult book, but I've read many that have been excellent. This was mediocre and disappointing.
I thought that this book was great. It had an intriguing plot line, plenty of twists and turns, and each chapter was a different letter of the alphabet (A Is For Arsony, etc.). HOWEVER, I was disappointed with the ending. Rather than subtly make a point and then end the story, the author got incredibly PREACHY. I think the point could have been made succintly and then the story could have cheerfully trotted along to it's conclusion. Instead, the author went on and on. Her point wasn't bad (basically, it's wrong to force people to believe something and kill them if they won't), but she ruined the point by making it too clear. Also, the cover says "Imagine a world in which all books are BANNED!", which is fairly inaccurate. Not ALL books are banned, just the unapproved ones. Is there a big heap o' censorship going on in this story? Yes. Are ALL books banned? No.
So, good story. Disappointingly preachy, though.
