i loved this book! the overall message was amazing, and i liked the ending even though it was a lot more simple than i thought it would be. mosca is a really cool twelve year old in my opinion. a lot of the characters are so interesting & inspiring and i can tell there was a lot of effort put in designing and crafting everyone!! I loved every character. the plot twists make u question everybody it's so cool, so please read!

No rating, DNF at 34%. Great premise and I really want to love this one, but I’m finding keeping up with the convoluted twists and turns more laborious than it’s worth. If I were thoroughly engaged and invested in the characters, I would hang with it and take notes so I could keep track of the many mysterious characters introduced briefly and then abandoned only to reappear after I’ve forgotten their previous short, obscure introductions. Problem is, I’m not invested and I haven’t bonded with a single character. It’s disappointing because the story began with promising wit and humor and as I mentioned, a great premise, but the humor has dried up and I’m left feeling sadly ambivalent.

Boy, I'm glad I decided to re-read this. I have no idea why I didn't care for it the first time, given how much I adore all her other books.

"I don't want a happy ending. I want more story." Me too, Mosca.

It was pretty good, just didn’t enjoy enough to finish.

3.5 stars.

I loved every second of reading this book and, if I’d have had it my way, I would not have put it down; I’d have devoured it cover-to-cover in one sitting. Mosca is such a relatable yet intriguing character; she reminds me of Lyra from Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ - one of my favourite fantasy series - but the smaller universe made this a much less dense read than the HDM books, in my opinion. I also found it really refreshing to have a female protagonist on the brink of her teenage years, without there being even a hint of a love interest.
I wish I could go back in time and give this to my younger self to read. She’d love it.

I really liked the world Hardinge dreams up, the ideas. To some extent the ideas outstrip the writing - too many characters and weaving plotlines and it doesn't quite hold together by the end - but there's so much to think about that even though I could've raced through it faster for the pace of the story, I kept slowing myself down to chew over it as I went. If that makes any sense.

Fabulous book. The author has a magical way with words. It was moving, thought provoking and, at times, laugh out loud funny.

A coming of age story with a side helping of an exploration of the power of words.

I particularly liked that there wasn't a clear set of Good Guys and Bad Guys. Instead, everyone was flawed and everyone had their own reasons (valid to them) for the choices they made. It gave the story a lot of depth. Not what is typically found shelved in the YA section.
