Brother Odd

Dean Koontz

3.25 stars. Weird and strange, but very readable. Odd Thomas is living at a monastery in which nuns are taking care of disabled children. A tremendous horror is about to be let loose and the children are endangered.

Favorite one yet. It was sweet and deep, and I love the growth that Odd Thomas is showing.

Enjoyed the first two, but feel that this is where the story lines start to jump the shark.

Actually rating 2.5. As much as I love the character that is Odd Thomas I just can't bring myself to give it a solid 3 stars. Much like the second book, this one had a very slow start. Roughly 60 pages in things finally start to pick up somewhat, though off and on my interest waned quite a bit. Loved the first book, the second and now third book just haven't wowed me as much as the first. Despite this I still found myself enjoying the story in general and plan on reading the next book in the series.

I'm definitely invested in the Odd Thomas series so I will be continuing, but this just seemed to be one of those books where the publisher was hounding the writer and maybe he wasn't sparked by a deeper inspiration so he just sort of made something up and started to have fun with it to see where it went. I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous ones and it had less intuitions about life, enjoyable none the less.

I listened to this book on tape, and for some reason I really enjoyed it. I haven't read the first 2 books in this series, but that didn't seem to interfere with my ability to understand the story. It was very different than I had thought it would be. The cover made it look so ominous, but most of the story is actually quite humorous. I loved the wordplay that takes place between the main character and the Russian "librarian". Some of the writing seemed a little juvenile, but other parts made me laugh out loud. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the first two books.

This was fun. I've been down on Koontz in recent years and had not enjoyed his more recent work compared to some of the older stuff. But this was solid and easy. The nuns and monks may excellent foils and I don't remember the banter being this fun in the previous Odd Thomas books, but it's been a while since I read those.

I loved it. The idea of some sort of machine working beyond the quantum level, that can create creatures was fascinating, and as always, Odd's wording and turn of phrase are both amusing and riveting.
