Way better than the first book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think this story as a whole was a lot better than The Stopover. There was more character building between the fMC and mMC.

Claire Anderson. I more or less liked her. There were a few times I felt like she gave in too easily to Tristan. But I liked her regardless. She made a few questionable remarks/choices that I didn’t particularly like but I saw those as a character flaw. I hate when fMCs are perfect, so to see realistic and relatable character flaws is quite refreshing.

Tristan Miles. I quite enjoyed his character since book 1. So seeing his love story was great. I think the only thing I didn’t like was his insistence on changing the boys’ last names. I’m not divorced or widowed, but I couldn’t imagine changing my daughter’s last name. I loved his wit, his banter, and even his arrogance. Tristan will live in my mind rent free for some time to come.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the time skip, but it seemed necessary so we could understand the progress of their relationship.

There were a few instances that tugged on my heart strings. I actually think Tristan’s development with Claire’s three sons was my favorite part. It was wholesome, and something I wasn't expecting. So far, he’s my favorite Miles brother.

Very mixed feelings on this one.

We follow Claire and Tristan who start off as business rivals who jump into a passionate casual thing that very quickly becomes genuinely serious.

Claire is 38, widowed, with three sons - the oldest who is now 18. She has a lot grief trauma and baggage.

Tristan is a very smart, very wealthy business acquisition expert. He’s 34 and way more emotionally intelligent than I’d have expected in a lot of ways.

Not my usual relationship dynamic of interest or favourite tropes (beyond the enemies to lovers flavour at the beginning) but I enjoyed a lot of how this played out. Tristan’s relationship with the sons was my favourite and I’d like to see them as adults latter.

Overall, better on audio than kindle (I switched back and forth).

The Takeover, by T. L. Swan, is the second book in the Miles High Club series, and features Claire, a 38 year old widow and mother of three boys, and Tristan, a 34 year old wealthy and successful part-owner of a rival media business. As Claire struggles to keep the advertising company she and her late husband founded (she wants to pass it to her sons), she meets Tristan and turns down the offer for his company to purchase hers and bail her out. Months later, the two are both at a business conference and the sexual tension is off the charts! After a few rounds in the hotel room, they agree to spend a 'just this once' romantic weekend together in Paris, with plenty of time in the bedroom. So Claire is surprised, back at home and back in her day to day life, when playboy Tristan wants to pursue their relationship...

For me, this book started off strongly, setting up a rivalry and a multitude of practical hurdles this relationship would have to vault to succeed. I was totally on board with the 'hate-to-love' trope, and I thought the idea of a blended family situation was intriguing. However, after the characters return to the U.S. and are trying to determine what a real relationship would look like, the characters became whiny and annoying, and the writing quality took a nose dive.

Claire "giggled" after everything Tristan said, he insinuated himself into her life and took a hand in making parenting decisions without ever having a discussion about parenting with Claire. Tristan went from being very reluctant to having anything to do with Claire and her family to suddenly being at her house all the time and building model rockets with her sons. He gave sex advice to the oldest, and babysat the younger ones literally when Claire had no idea he was even at her home--and yet when she comes home to find him there cuddling with her youngest on the couch, she is just so pleased to see such a domestic scene. He basically goes into the relationship with the idea that he'll "put up with" her snot-nosed brats because there's just "something special" about her.

The big conflict/drama that happened in the last 25% was stupid, in my opinion--I don't understand Claire's reaction or resistance to the subject Tristan brings up. Despite multiple attempts to discuss the problem, Claire refuses to budge or even explain her reasoning, and so they break up and are both absolutely devastated and heartbroken. And then the resolution just happens--they both say 'okay, you win' and that's the end. It was super frustrating to read!

This book is long, and I felt every page. The sexy times were pretty steamy, though not always to my taste (re: seemed rough?). Overall I felt that the writing was simplistic and contradictory, and the characters seemed flat, immature, and annoying.
I've not read anything else by this author, but would be willing to give her another shot. Unfortunately for me, The Takeover rates a measly 2 stars.

Tristian. Miles. I’m so glad I stuck it out and decided to continue the miles high club series! I really enjoyed reading the story of Tristian and Claire. It was hilarious at parts and heartbreaking in others. I loved the dynamic between Tristian and the three boys. Tristian’s initial reaction was also so realistic to me. I liked how T.L. Swan didn’t get sweep the single mom part under the rug and made Tristian automatically like the boys. Realistically, as a playboy, it was normal for him to ghost Claire after the initial meeting—he was legit attacked. It was also very interesting to see the FMC as the one who grovels. Such a fun read.

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. I AM IN LOVE WITH TRISTAN AND CLAIRE.

this book was so swoony, and so sweet. i almost couldn't put it down. their relationship growth was so sweet, and seeing tristan with her kids made my heart melt. i absolutely loved them, and i want more SO BAD. (i felt the ending was kind of rushed). this book was so real, i felt so many emotions to claire's grief and guilt, to tristan's growth and patience. this was soo good.
