I had never seen Sarah Silverman’s show. I don’t remember her from SNL. I haven’t really seen much of her standup. But… I know a good number of friends who really love her. So, I figured I’d give her book a shot. Maybe I’d learn a lot about her and really like her as a person and then want to watch all of her work. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
I listened to her audiobook and enjoyed that she seemed to have a conversation rather than just read in a monotone voice. However, after a while… her voice did start to get to me. That’s just the nature of listening to the audiobook though… so not really a review of the content.
Now, the content… meh. I enjoyed a few stories (summer camp was probably my favorite) but overall, I was left feeling like there wasn’t anything really special. She still seems completely average. Oh, you have a drug story? Cool… so does every other comedian ever. Oh, you like fart jokes and have awkward moments and share weird experiences with friends and family? So does everyone else ever. Sorry, but the only thing ‘special’ about this book is that she reveals that she wet the bed until she was a preteen. That sucks, but that’s the kind of stuff you just write in a blog post and call it a day.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It provided a lot of insight into making TV and being a funny person. It was also a bit like "Just Kids" for the comic world, tons of stories of the big names we all love, Louis CK, Todd Barry, her SNL cast, Jimmy Kimmel, etc. It was a REAL book, not comedy covering up real emotions.
One of the best books I've read in a while. I highly, highly recommend it. If you're a fan, you'll love it...and if you're not, what's wrong with you?
I needed something fluffy after my last book and this did the trick. I love Sarah and her weird, slow sense of humor, though her memoir wasn't all sunshine and laughs. I love that she talked about the bedwetting and depression she suffered in her teens, her time in NYC as a young adult, and her career highs and lows.
I have to admit, I enjoyed listening to this. It wasn't Tina Fey's Bossypants by any stretch of the imagination, but I looked forward to getting into the car to hear more.
3.5 starts -- funny, quick listen (audiobook read by Sarah Silverman is great).
Maybe I've just read too many comedian bios lately, but I wasn't as impressed with this one. While I have a sick sense of humor, this one majorly crosses the line at times. Don't get me wrong, there were definitely some funny stories and it was an easy and mindless read.
I LOVED this book. Of course, I've heard of Sarah Silverman but honestly, the most I really knew of her was the Matt Damon video and the comeback video by Jimmy Kimmel with Ben Affleck. Now that I've read this book, I will be downloading all of her shows etc. She is funny!
This was such an enjoyable hilarious read while being so crazy busy in my life, it was a much welcome break from the chaos plus she has a very dirty mind like mine!!

Wow. This did not age well. I forgot how awful she used to be. I'm glad she has evolved. Somewhat.
