I definitely should have read this when it was new. Her kind words about Louis CK and Al Franken made me cringe now. Also, I'm pretty sure we had already deemed the word "retarded" as inappropriate back in 2009. Other than that, I enjoyed the book and I still think Sarah Silverman is great and smart and hilarious.
My husband and I enjoyed listening to Tina Fey's Bossypants last year as we drove to the beach, so I thought I would find another comedienne's audiobook memoir for our drive this year. We were disappointed. Not a single laugh out loud moment did we share. We did not finish the audiobook.
I want to like Sarah Silverman's sense of humor, but I don't. Maybe I'm too much of a prude. I loved her Vote for Obama in Florida viral video and her Matt Damon video for the Jimmy Kimmel show. She's raunchy and inappropriate and that's OK because that's her thing.
I didn't laugh when she made fun of herself or others in the book. I just felt sorry for them.

Sarah Silverman, adorable Jewish comic, creator of the Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program, star of such viral videos as "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" and "The Great Schlep", lays bare her deepest childhood trauma, a long and reliable history of bed wetting. Eventually she gets around to other parts of her life, her dad, who rivals Justin Halpern's (of Sh*t My Dad Says fame), her start in show business, depression, and of course, penises, mainly those of the writing staff on TSSP.
This is a quick fun read that still manages to tell some real details about Silverman's early years. If you're not worried about being offended by jokes about bodily functions, ethnic and racial stereotypes, or any other highly combustible topic, there's certainly worse ways to spend your time.

I am conflicted about this book.
On one hand, it's very well written; humorous and insightful and poignant.
On the other hand, at times (mostly in the second half) it is extremely vulgar and can be hard to take.
I guess, in this way, the book mirrors the author, and appropriately so.
I tend to like Sarah Silverman. I think she's funny and innovative. But she often crosses a line that makes me turns away. I just don't have any appreciation for vulgar/toilet/pothead type humor.
I'm not sorry I read the book. I really enjoyed the first half. I started skimming parts of the second half though and felt it took away from the overall worth of the book.

Funny, quick read. I'm not entertained by her typical gross shock value jokes but I recently watched Sarah Silverman's new stand up show that's on Netflix and liked it. So I thought I'd give the book a shot. Some typical Sarah ridiculousness but I liked her honesty, even if she covered up the rough parts with jokes.

Besides Sarah's obsession with Pee, Fart, Penis and Vagina jokes; I really enjoyed this book. I thought this book was almost on the same level as David Sedaris good. She is quick whited and really knows how to tell stories of her family and experience with constantly peeing in strangers homes. I would also have to say she was a better read then Ellen DeGeneres. Both are very funny women, but the differences in their books is that Sarah had a real path for the reader and direction, unlike reading Ellen's "Seriously.. I'm kidding." I would suggest people to read and download the audio of this, because Sarah gave a great performance, reading the book out loud.
