Beastly Bones

All the things I like: historical fiction, a smidge of fantasy, a mystery to solve, feminist people, a ghost, a duck who was once a person... you get the idea. But it just didn't sing for me this time. Still quite good, and the series is something I wholeheartedly suggest.

This book was so much fun! I think I enjoyed the first one more, but it was still great with hilarious witty banter from Jackaby. Can’t wait to read the third book in the series.

I enjoyed Beastly Bones more than Jackaby. The story and mystery progressed steadily and the character interactions were great. I found myself laughing at times because of the conversations between Abigail and Jackaby. There was also plenty of surprises I didn't see coming. Great read overall!

This series is fine but it feels too young for my taste. Definitely should appeal to middle grade readers though.

Didn’t love it as much as the first. I think the only reason I didn’t was simply because the whole paleontology thing just isn’t my thing. I also thought there wasn’t a real conclusion in the end.

“Miss Rook, on a scale of one to pomegranate, how dangerous would you say this situation has become?"
"Dangerous?" I faltered.
"Yes, Miss Rook," prompted Jackaby, in your expert opinion."
"On a scale of one to pomegranate?" I followed his lead, checking over the notes I had scribbled in my notepad and speaking in my most audible, serious whisper. "I should think ... acorn? Possibly badger. Time alone will tell.”

“That’s nonsense,” said Jackaby. “Fortune favors the prepared. Unless you’re talking about the Fates, in which case fortune generally favors Zeus. Were you talking about the Fates?”

“By request of my employer, the contents of chapter thirteen have not only been omitted; they have been pulled directly from my typewriter, shredded, and used as terrarium liner for a particularly pungent frog.”

Sequels are usually disappointing, but this one definitely wasn't. It just got better!

the endings of these are always so lovely & sweet

so overall, this was okay. sadly I didn't enjoy this as much as the first on. I think this was due to Jackaby and Abigail doing their own things separately for most of the book - I really missed all their banter (there was a severe lack of it in this sequel). However I'm still looking forward to reading the next one! the relationships are developing and I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures they get up to next :)
