Historical whodunnits have to be one of my top favorite kinds of books. Throw in a little bit of fantasy and a strong female character and I'm sold for sure. After quite enjoying Jackaby last year, I was excited to read the sequel, and I was not disappointed. The world expands a little bit in this one, as Abigail and R.F. Jackaby are called out to Gad's Valley to investigate some missing dinosaur bones and eventually a series of murders. I didn't guess the outcome, but when it was all said and done I felt like I should have been able to see it coming.
I'm also very excited for Ghostly Echoes, as the plot for that one was teased a bit throughout the story in Beastly Bones.
Longer review to come.

In this second book of a series, we follow Abigail Rook and her partner/boss Jackaby as they investigate strange murders around an archaeological dig. In this installment, Abigail gets to put her archaeological knowledge to use, and she's a total BAMF about it. The boys best watch themselves because there are a healthy amount of ladies who are awesome in this installment. Jackaby is featured a little less in this one, but is still a fun, lovable, totally weird character. The story is similar in tone to the first one, and is overall a nice second installment in what reads as a "case of the week" series (and now I can totally see this being a TV show).
The big bad in this one was ultimately fun, but (and I can't really say anything without spoilers), I appreciated some of the obscure mythology of the first book a little more. I guess I'd say that the mystery in the first book was a little more...mysterious. And while I liked Charlie (our romantic interest) in the first book, he didn't do much for me in this installment.
Overall, though, a highly enjoyable read! I will check out future installments in the series. 3 stars.

The Jackaby series is simply fun to read. It makes me smile, so it gets more stars. I have a very sophisticated rating system.
Read for the challenge of:
"Read a book set more than a 100 years ago"
I've been wanting to read this book ever since it came out in September, so finally! I was able to read it.
Beastly Bones had every single element that I loved in Jackaby and more. I still absolutely love Jackaby and Abigail's interactions, and this book had elements hinting at the next storyline in this series which I'm more than happy is continuous. It is a lot of fun to have different mysteries but I'd love to see a long story arc from this series!
Ghostly Echos cannot come fast enough.
I enjoyed this book, but not quite so much as the first one. I like that we got to see even more of Abigail sleuthing and whatnot in this book, but Jackaby felt oddly absent? The plot wasn't bad, but it reached a point where everything clicked together and then when it was revealed later on in the book, I was like "Yep, called it!" One death in particular irked me slightly. I'm holding onto the hope that they aren't actually dead and that they're involved with the Big Bad seen throughout the story. Fingers crossed!
Nevertheless, it was a fun read. These books are just really fun, to be honest. I have Ghostly Echoes ready and waiting for me - book 2 in my Dewey 24hr Readathon lineup!

The characters are as fantastic as ever and I loved the new additions and the character growth. However, the entire book was a side-quest with eh pacing that made it drag a lot in the middle. I was considering taking a break from the series when the last few chapters made me excited for the next book. The tight pacing and constant suspense made book one fantastic, so I’m hoping this book is an anomaly.

"On a scale of one to pomegranate?" I followed his lead, checking over the notes I had scribbled in my notepad and speaking in my most audible, serious whisper. "I should think ... acorn? Possibly badger. Time alone will tell.” 😂
Once again the main characters served. Reading the adventures of Abigail, Jackaby, Charlie, Jenny and Douglas are like being with your best friends. How they can come up with just the most random stuff to say while cracking me up is just so entertaining. Abigail and Charlie admitting their feelings is so cute, and as usual Jackaby is just unfazed which is so what his character would do!
The major problem I had is compared to the predecessor, there is just so much more fluff that does not pay off in the end drama between professors and Jenny acting up (although the next book is most likely to be about her) , making the plot quite unbearable to continue being entertained. Digging and dinosaurs are just not my thing. The mystery is very predictable too, which I expect more of since this is ultimately a mystery series. Maybe I would bump it a bit higher in the future, but it would be solely based on the main characters and their interactions.
☆2.5 Stars☆
