3.5. These books are so much fun!! Such wonderful character development & kooky outlandish but completely engaging plots. Great middle grade read. This is one of those books that if your kid brings it home you should read it too!! Better yet, run out and buy this series for the whole family. HA! can;t wait for the next one..................

Sometimes when I discover a new book that hits me right in the genres, I get the added thrill of learning that a sequel will soon be published. That’s what happened to me with William Ritter’s Rook and Jackaby series. I read the first one, Jackaby, through my local library. I was fortunate enough to snag an advanced reader copy of Beastly Bones for review consideration within twelve months. (This is soon in book time.) Beastly Bones takes place some time after the dramatic conclusion of Jackaby. Abigail Rook, our narrator and chief protagonist, has had some time to settle in as assistant to the world’s strangest detective...

Another fantastic novel by Ritter! I enjoyed it so much! I am so happy to have a found a series I that absolutely love to dive into each time! My favorite quote of this book was when Jackaby said, “Failure is not the opposite of success—it’s a part of it. And as failures go,” he added with a lopsided grin, “this one was really spectacular, wasn’t it?”

So good!!! I highly recommend! I can't wait to read the third novel!

Book 2 of the series. Quirky characters and astounding situations. Of course a murder

Nothing worse then finally getting to read the newest installment in a series, racing through it, loving it, then having to wait another year or so until the next one comes out.

Jackaby and his able assistant Abigail Rook are back chasing crimes and mysteries of the supernatural kind. I tried the first book after reading the description, "Recommend this to readers who enjoy Doctor Who, Supernatural, Grimm, the Dresden Files, Harry Potter, and of course, Sherlock Holmes stories...." Yep, that's me and it delivers.

I am very pleased with how this book turned out. Ms. Rook is the same as ever; empowering, witty and intelligent. Jackaby continues to be a mystery from us all and the case is ever so complex as before. It appears that both Abigail and Jackaby are facing a new threat after this book. I am a bit confused about the different characters and how they relate to the story but this book was very enjoyable for me to read.

A decent follow-up, if a bit less substantial and less tightly plotted than the first book. Still the same formula- a supernatural version of Sherlock Holmes, but with a plucky! headstrong! anachronistic! female protagonist/narrator, who fortunately is well written. Jackaby himself gets somewhat short shrift this time around, as the action gets split between several different somewhat uninteresting locales and characters and weird creatures. Ritter seems to be working from the Hollywood "more-is-more" playbook, as this book seems to have everything but the kitchen sink thrown into it.

Beastly Bones is an entirely forgettable, predictable detective story. Sure there's some supernatural creatures thrown in there to try to distinguish it from every other average mystery, but honestly, the random other-worldly beings got tiresome and eye-roll worthy. The characters are flat, and the "romance" has quite possibly the dullest love interest of all time. And the number of times Abigail refers to Jackaby as "my employer" is ridiculous.

fun!! not altogether very profound but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. entertaining more than anything. and his rewritten history is hilarious and surprisingly logical.
