I got an ARC of Jackaby, book one in this series, at BEA last year and it was being touted as Sherlock meets Dr. Who. I was intrigued, and although it felt more like Sherlock meets Supernatural to me, I totally loved it. So when I had the opportunity to borrow my friend Ciara’s ARC of Beastly Bones, the sequel to Jackaby, I jumped at the chance!

I love the writing in this book. William Ritter’s descriptions are vivid and he makes the world feel rich, alive, and real. I can feel like I’m right there. And I love Jackaby himself! He’s still somewhat of a mystery, but intriguing and kind of charming.

Our heroine, Abigail, is plucky, intelligent, and brave – I love her, and her platonic relationship with Jackaby. I truly loved that, while there is a light romance in the book, it isn’t between Abigail and Jackaby.

Loving supernatural and paranormal stories as much as I do, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had so many elements of stories I love: action, adventure, supernatural creatures, humour, and platonic, non-romantic relationships. I may have enjoyed this even more than Jackaby, to be honest.

I truly hope that there will be another book in the series. I feel like the world Abigail and Jackaby innhabit is so rich and full of stories to be told. Also, I have a theory about Jenny, the ghost in Jackaby’s house (or, to be more accurate, the ghost in whose house Jackaby lives) and her life, and I need to know if my theory is correct. So more Jackaby books please!

This is a series that I must own. Highly recommended!!

3/5 stars

this is a case of me guessing the outcome of a mystery investigation and actually being satisfied at being proven right, rather than being annoyed or bored at the end of it. i think william ritter writes great mysteries that you feel invested in, characters that are fun to follow with wonderful friendships, and i'm really enjoying this series. charlie and abigail are just cheesy fun, and jackaby and abigail have such a wonderful friendship and you can see how much he cares about her and his friends, as difficult as he finds it being open!!!!

Fun piled on top of more fun.

Another enjoyable book in this series. Good story, good characters. Slow at times but still interesting. Quite enjoyable and I'm glad I finally tried the books out.

This one was even better than the first! Bones, dragons, romance, fire, and a brilliant ending leading to the next book. Eeeekkkkk! Cannot wait to read the third book!

What a delight!
Beastly Bones is definitely a much darker book than Jackaby. Perfect for this time of the year.
It's fast paced, super entertaining and not at all predictable.
The characters in this series are just amazing. I love Jackaby and his matter of fact attitude. Abigail is an amazing heroine. She's a strong character, but she's not over the top, the smartest, most beautiful, most talented as a lot of female protagonists.
It was such an atmospheric read, I could not recommend it enough.
If you like Sherlock Holmes and some paranormal, supernatural stories, you will fall in love with this series.

After a dubious beginning to this series, Ritter came back with a punch! Beastly Bones managed to weave together a gorgeously atmospheric story about archaeology and paranormal shenanigans. It had so many elements that I love: feminist female lead, slightly eccentric and socially maladjusted genius sleuth, subtle sassiness, shape-shifters, and cute police offiers. It completely sucked me, and made me fall in love with Abigail and Jackaby’s crazy world.

The plotline was just perfect - exactly what I wanted from this series in the first place. I thought that the mystery was suspenseful and engaging in all the ways a proper mystery should be. I was guessing at every corner! The new mythology and paranormal creatures we are introduce to in this sequel tied well into the overall storyline and didn’t feel nearly as forced or out of place as they did in the first book. The setting - both the historical era and the countryside - was the perfect backdrop for the sleuthing and academic squabbling aspects too.

However, what truly worked for me the most was our protagonist, Abigail. She has such amazing character growth in this sequel! I simply adored how she actually listened to her friends’ advice and took it on board. She learned so many valuable lesson throughout the story and actually put them into practice. What did let it down a little bit for me was Jackaby. I think he is a fantastic character in theory - you probably know by now how much of a thing I have for geniuses - but we still don’t get to know him as well as I would like. I want to get inside his head. I really think dual narration would work wonders for this series. I just need more Jackaby!

The romantic tension should have annoyed me but it purposefully had very little “page time” and really was only the smallest of subplots. It never retracted from the story and was actually used to fuel some of Abigail’s character development so it worked out rather well in the end. I just wish we got to know Charlie a little better! I adore them together though and definitely look forward to seeing how it will advance in the sequel.

While we still didn’t get a lot of answers in this book about the how and why of Jackaby’s abilities - or the even why no one believes paranormal creatures exists in this world when they so obviously do - the new mythology introduced and the adventures it sets the characters off on was so well-done and enthralling, I couldn’t really muster the energy to be bothered by it.

Overall, I enjoyed Beastly Bones a great deal more than I did the first book. My biggest complaint are simply that a) we still don’t know Jackaby as well as I would like, and b) everyone has exactly the same sense of humour (which just isn’t realistic, no matter how hilariously witty Ritter is). Abigail was the perfect protagonist for this story and the plotline worked well on so many levels. I really just cannot complain that much at all! Entertaining and engrossing. I’d definitely recommend continuing on with the series if you were iffy after Jackaby. The third book sounds even better too!

I had heard that the first book was by far the best of the series so I was intreagued to see how much I would enjoy this one. Personally, I found it equally enjoyable. The new characters were very interesting and there was lots of good character development for the pre existing characters. One of the main things I look for in a good read is character development. Abigail continues to be a strong female lead and I find her inspiring. She's not always sure of herself but she is brave and tries very hard and wants to be respected. I connect with her very much though she is far braver than I. I was also very pleased to see Charlie again.

3.75 stars!
