3.5 stars. The supernatural elements to the story were a bit odd for me, but made more sense once I read the author's notes at the end. I highly recommend that anyone who disliked or were confused by the incubus/succubus and "twin flame" aspects of the story read the author's notes.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was cool to be able to notice the parallels between this story and the original and the musical.

I read this book in one day... it one sitting... because the atmosphere of the story just sucked me in and refused to let me go until I finished the book.
If you enjoy The Phantom of the Opera as much as I do, I HIGHLY recommend giving this book a shot. Be warned that it is incredibly slow paced but it is so damn beautiful.

I really wanted to like this book. I can't say I hated it, but I can't say I fully enjoyed it. It didn't draw me in like I expected it. The only thing that I really liked was that sometimes the author had lyrical, verse-like writing. Otherwise, the book was slightly boring and fell short for me. Three stars were being generous based off the fact that I'm a musician.
I don't really know where to begin with my review of this book. There is SO MUCH in my head right now that I want to get out. I just want to start off by saying, when I heard that this was a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA RETELLING, I thought "okay, sign me up!" It is a well-known fact among people who know me that I am a tad obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera. I've read the book, seen a few of the movie adaptations, I have the musical soundtrack memorized, and it is my DREAM to see the musical on Broadway (this one has to wait a bit...I'm just a poor college student). That being said, when I discovered the existence of this book, I kinda freaked out. I really wanted to see what another author could do to expand the story, so I had some pretty high expectations. I'm very sad to say, I am very disappointed...and here's why.
The beginning of this book starts off very confusing. You have a girl, Rune, from Texas going to an Opera school in France. She's very nervous and just overall does not want to be at this school. She tries all these excuses with her mom that aren't working and there are a lot of inner thoughts in this section as well. To be honest, there was quite a bit of information to gather from just the first two chapters alone that are somewhat relevant throughout the story.
There is, in general, A LOT of information being push in every direction, trying to fill in holes between the original book, internet research, and what the author wanted this book to be. There was so much going on, if someone has never read or even seen The Phantom of the Opera, don't pick this up. You would be thoroughly confused. There is just so much background information that you'd need to understand.
This book was also very slow, which made it pretty boring. I actually had to force myself to continue reading just because I wanted to know what the author had come up with as a story for the Phantom 100 years after his supposed death. I was actually liking the story, despite how slow it was until the mention of vampires. That whole thing just ruined the whole book for me to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I love vampire stories. There was just something about the whole vampire thing that made it so I couldn't even like it. I don't think it even matters that they are Psychic vampires (vampires that feed off of energy vs. blood). Just that term being used...
I gave the book 3 stars instead of two just because there were some really well-done points in the book. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a huge fan, but some of the things the author come up with as theories were good. Like the twin flames thing between Christine and The Phantom (and in the book, Rune and Thorn). I liked the idea that their music went so well together because their souls were one. I didn't like the thing with the baby. At all. That...was a bit much.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend you read this if you haven't at least watched one of the film adaptations (The 1989 version is the closest version to the book as well as the 2004 version. The first is more horror, the second is more romance. Both give a good idea as to what is in the book).
